1987 Renault 5 TL (26, 040 miles) Project Car For Sale - Please read description carefully! I am selling my 1987 Renault 5 TL, which I purchased back in June 2022. I bought this car as a project car (when I bought it, it was not running, and needed a variety of different tasks doing to it), however due to work commitments and space limitations, I sadly don't have the time to carry on and finish it off. Since I purchased the car, I have fully refurbished the steel wheels back to the original paint, I have serviced the car (new spark plugs, air filter, oil filter, oil, fuel filter, coolant), and I have detailed the interior and exterior (applying a ceramic coating to the exterior). I have replaced all the perished hoses under the bonnet, and also purchased a new carburettor for the car (the old one had a small defect in it, and there was no vacuum). I also removed all the old fuel from the tank, and I have cleaned the sender unit and filters. The car has also had a new cooling fan fitted (the old one was broken). The Renault recently had it's MOT at our local garage, and it has had 4 brand new tyres fitted, as indicated by the MOT (failed for two of them, but replaced all of them). The garage commented on how immaculate, rust free, and sound the car was, and that it needed to be driven! This is proven by the advisory free MOT on the car. I am selling this as a project, as there are still a few tasks that need to be completed on the car (which sadly I do not have the time/ space any more to do myself). This includes some minor bodywork repairs (a dent in the rear offside door, surface rust below the windscreen - very common on the R5s - and also the carburettor needs tuning as it is not running very well). The car is incredibly low mileage for the age, and with these tasks done, the new owner would certainly be adding value, and would most likely see greater returns. The car has lots of history associated with it. It has had four previous owners, but three of these wereThe exterior of the car overall is in very good condition. Paintwork is bright and very good in most places, and the bumpers have faded very slightly. However, there are a few defects to the body and paintwork around the car (please see photos). There is a minor dent in the offside rear door, there is a dent in the nearside front door (drivers door), where the door has clearly been opened onto something, causing the outer edge to recess back slightly. There is also a patch of surface rust at the bottom of the windscreen in the centre (very typical of all 5s of this era), where part of the windscreen seal has failed. I have checked this myself, and it is just surface rust. Apart from these few defects, the paintwork and bumpers are all in a very good condition. The interior of the car is immaculate due to the low mileage. The seats are tear and stain free, and the back seats have never been used on the car, as I have been told by the previous family who owned the car. All the equipment inside works (including the original clock and stereo), and all buttons/ switchgear work. I have cleaned the interior (due to it smelling a bit fusty after sitting for a while), however now it is all cleaned, it looks like it has come straight out of the showroom. The car was (and is) from smoke and pet free household, so there are no animal smells or cigarette smells in the interior (the original lighter is also clear). I purchased the car back in June 2022 from the grandson of the original owner. The car was purchased by the family back in 1988 (it had one owner prior to this), and has been the family car since. The car was passed down from generation to generation: from grandparents, to children, to grandchildren, and this is shown by the four owners (three of these were the same family) on the V5. The car was used as a town car in Windsor, and was used very lightly (hence the low mileage). The car spent it's last 10 years (prior to me purchasing it) garage stored, and it was sold to me after a house clearance. The car comes with some original recepits and paperwork (including the delivery certificate). The car was garage stored all of it's life, hence no rust. Since purchasing the vehicle, I have completed a variety of different tasks, including refurbishing the steel wheels, cleaning the interior and exterior (and ceramic coating the exterior), a full service, and a replacement of perished hoses under the bonnet. Sadly, due to work commitments and also losing storage, I am unable to finish this project, which is why I am selling it. Overall, the car is sound and rust free, and all the mechanical components are in very good condition due to the low mileage. The car recently had it's MOT, where it only failed for two tyres (however I have replaced all 4 of them). The MOT is advisory free, and the local family run garage where I get all my cars tested commented on how sound and rust free the car was, and that it looked like a new car from underneath...... all they said is that it needs to be driven!
I have fully serviced the car, replacing all the consumables (oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, oil, coolants), and I have also syphoned the fuel tank, removing the 'silt' that had accumulated over the years it had been sitting. The engine runs well (I can send a video of it running), and it has been for a few test drives. However, the carburettor does need tuning, as it is not running completely well. The car does run and drive, however the carburettor will need some attention.
