This 1962 Morris Traveller, uniquely converted to ‘California’ Woodie style is a pristine example of one of Britain’s best-loved cars.
The California conversion pays homage to a 60s west-coast surfer trend, with hand-carpented wood replacing the metal back panels - adding a relaxed beachy flair to a quintessentially British car.
The car’s unique and professionally-restored exterior is complemented by special limited edition duotone interiors, exclusively produced between 1962-64.
Woodie drives beautifully with a Morris 1098 Engine in full working order, a smooth gearbox and newly upgraded brakes with servo upgrade.
The dashboard is complete with wooden Moto Lita steering wheel and rare original glove box doors.

Designed by Alec Issigonis, mastermind behind the Mini, Morris Minors were manufactured near Oxford and the first cars in history to exceed 1 million sales.
The Traveller is the estate version of the classic Morris Minor and first went into production in 1953. The 1962 Traveller represented the turn of an era, with the all-new Morris 1098 engine reaching top speeds of 77mph and ushering in the motorway era.
... MEETS WEST COAST SURF CULTURE -
In the 40s and 50s, semi-wooden cars were a hallmark of style and class and became an icon in both the US and Europe. In the early 60s, wooden cars fell out of mainstream vogue and woodies became an affordable choice for surfers on a budget.
Woodies inadvertently became an icon of 60s west-coast surf culture, memorialised in the songs of the Beach Boys.
- GORGEOUS HAND-STITCHED, LIMITED EDITION INTERIORS -
This Traveller boasts a special edition duotone interior that had a limited run between 1962 and 1964. The interior was restored with handmade liners, covers and heat-moulded carpets to match the original patterns.
The driver’s seat is fully adjustable on the base and lifts up to give access to the back bench. The passenger seat collapses in half and tips forward.
The rear bench seat folds down for a double-sized boot, which is accessible through double wooden doors at the rear. These open to reveal a trunk lined with varnished wooden interior panels that bring the ‘woodie’ conversion inside.
The wood theme culminates in a gorgeous wooden Mota Lita steering wheel. The glove boxes are lined in faux leather and closed with rare original glove box doors.
- AN EXPERTLY-CRAFTED AND RESTORED EXTERIOR -
The Traveller underwent a professional full-body restoration and respray in its original 'smoke grey' colour.
The wheels were upgraded to the Morris Marina’s slightly larger sized wheels for a smoother ride and finished with ‘M’ embossed hub caps.
The original Ash frame was remade in 2004 and has been recently sanded and oiled as part of the full restoration.
The ‘Woodie’ conversion was carried out with the support of a local carpenter, using hand-crafted wooden panels that were then oiled for protection and to achieve the bespoke finish. Unlike many other 'woodie' conversions, the panels on this Traveller are solid marine-grade wood, not fake wood or thin veneer.
- THE ICONIC, SMOOTH AND POWERFUL MORRIS 1098 -
The 1098 engine is in fantastic working order, starting straight away and driving smoothly. The restoration involved a full engine service and replacing the spark plugs, filters, and gaskets, as well as upgrading to an electric fuel pump.
The engine compartment was thoroughly cleaned, resprayed and polished during the restoration.
The gearbox is in excellent condition and works smoothly. The brakes were upgraded with a servo modification for extra braking power.
The odometer reads 59, 000 miles, although this is not warranted.
UK-registered cars and motorbikes on Car & Classic are run through an online HPI check. On the HPI report, this vehicle shows no insurance database markers for damage or theft and has no finance owing.
This Traveller was bought in late 2021 from a private seller who had also recently bought the car as a project but was unable to take it on. Prior to that, Woodie has had 8 previous owners, the most recent significant owner being a vicar who had owned the car for a number of years.
Woodie comes with a paper MOT history and has been serviced with parts replaced when necessary to meet requirements. The ash frame, for example, was replaced in 2004 with a new frame, hand-built to original specifications. Woodie is now MOT-exempt.
Woodie underwent an extensive renovation with parts replaced where necessary and a professional bodywork restoration with small areas of welding where necessary. The chassis has been checked and welded in a couple of areas for extra strength.
