Henry Ford had such huge success in the roaring 20’s with the Model T he resisted replacing the car until his market share dropped from 57% to 34% in 1926.
On August 10th 1927 Henry Ford’s son Edsel announced the new model’s completion and the Model A was born.
The Model A engine is a 4 cylinder flathead design, developing 40 bhp at 2, 200 rpm. Unlike the previous Model T engine, the Model A powerplant used a more conventional battery, generator, coil and distributor system.
This car was built in Dearborn, Michigan and is one of the first to use the now conventional pedal layout with the accelerator on the right. UK build Model A’s used a smaller 2, 000cc for tax reasons and had the older style centre throttle pedal.
The Model A was produced in nearly 40 different body styles and by the time production ended in March, 1932, 4, 858, 644 had been made.‘Wonky’ has an interesting history, as I originally purchased the car at a local Richard Edmonds auction on behalf of a friend, from whom I then bought him a few years later.
Wonky is a very pretty car - and quite a head turner when in traffic or at a show. He's in overall very good condition, starts on the button and has just the right amount of patina for a 'truck'.
He's a delight to drive, requiring that bit more engagement than an average pre-war car, which makes going our for a drive so rewarding.
The car had been in Scotland but needed a little fettling and some new tyres, all of which was done by specialists. The doors were sign written by the Queens signwriter at a South West Coachworks in Lyme Regis.
Performance is surprisingly sprightly for a ‘20’s car, mainly because of the very light body.
The soft top can be removed for a fully open vehicle experience and I have a number of spare parts such as ‘wind wings’ and steering dampers which will be sold with the car.
A very reluctant sale, to fund another project...
