Available for sale is this 1974 Land Rover Series 3 SWB 2. 25 Diesel Utility Model, finished in Marine Blue. Overall the vehicle is in good original condition, having just passed its MOT.
GUK 653N is fitted with its original 2. 25L Diesel engine, although unpowered by today’s standards - the dependable and rock solid diesel engine is perfect for bumbling along country lanes in the summer between pubs and classic vehicle shows. The engine starts and runs well, after a short burst on the glow plugs, with that classic 2. 25D smoke clearing once she warms up.
The Land Rover drives well, starting stopping and steering just as well as you might expect from a nearly 50 year old Land Rover! The tyres are in good condition, with Avon Rangemasters on the front and General Super All Grips on the rear. The fitted LWB rims have been powder coated Limestone, which really lift the vehicle’s looks!
The chassis appears in good order, and has been kept protected for the majority of its life by the looks of things. It currently carries a partial coat of Waxoyl on the chassis – which shows some evidence of welding in places. The bulkhead does show signs of previous repair, with footwells having been patched in the past, these are not the neatest of jobs but they are completely functional and solid. If required, I can have access to a vehicle lift, where the underside of the Land Rover can be inspected should the buyer require.
As you can see from the photographs, this Land Rover carries mostly original paint with only a couple of repainted panels (bulkhead and door-tops), scratches and worn through panels here and there owe to a great well-used (and indeed very usable) looking patina overall – something that cannot be replicated. The bodywork is extremely straight for a vehicle of this age, and does clean up very well. In my opinion there is no better looking Land Rover than an 88 Van in Marine Blue!
Continuing on the theme of originality, the doors have recently been completely refurbished - taking great care to retain the original skins on the door bottoms. The doors have been adjusted, they open and close just as they should with impressively equally panel gaps for something that left Solihull in the 70s! New locks have been fitted all around, two sets of keys for these are supplied.
The interior of the vehicle remains almost completely original too, however some choice upgrades have been fitted. New seats are fitted to the front row of the vehicle, these are to the ‘delux’ design. The rear of the vehicle has clearly has bench seats fitted at some stage, although these have been removed by a previous owner. A set can be supplied if required.
The vehicle has recently been serviced, with the transfer, gearbox and differential oils having been changed. The handbrake has been rebuilt and adjusted. A new water pump has been fitted recently too.
I purchased the vehicle back in early 2021, hoping to get some use out of it myself and tinker away in COVID times. Unfortunately I have been busy since then, buying and renovating our first home. The Land Rover has spent most of the last two years in my dry storage workshop. The vehicle is now for sale to fund the rest of the home renovation and fund the next project!
I understand that the previous owner bought the Land Rover from a local farm auction. I do not have much history to go with the vehicle other than some old MOTs and the last few V5s showing the owner history.
My mechanic has just finished with the vehicle. It now has had the front swivels rebuilt, along with new brakes and adjustment all round. The vehicle now has 12months MOT, ready to enjoy! Even though the Land Rover does not require it, due to its historic tax status. Overall a great, mostly original, vehicle which can be used and improved over time.
The Land Rover can be delivered anywhere in the UK, if required – although viewing is always recommended.
