We are thrilled to be able to present for sale this remarkable vehicle – a Land Rover Dakar, based on a Range Rover Classic. We already run a Dakar at HQ which you may have seen…. which is a yellow variant with V8 power. Whenever we are out in it, or at the petrol station, it always strikes up a conversation about what it is, and where it is from. Everyone seems amazed to learn it is actually just a Classic Land Rover with a commercially purchased “kit” of parts to turn it into what is effectively a grown up beach buggy!
As can be seen from the photos and walk around video, this is a well sorted example which has benefitted from some recent, professional tweaks by the team at HQ. The body is fibre glass and speaks for itself. There are big side steps to get into this baby monster truck, and once installed, the road position feels great. There is a full set of large diameter, wide wheels including rear mounted spare, which give great road holding and superb off-road ability should you need it. Working front and rear winches promise that if you did find yourself in a boggy situation, that you can winch yourself to safety. There is a snorkel for wading (or flooding if you live near a river) and there is a chunk bull bar with fantastically bright lights for those dark back lanes in the winter months. There are additional illuminations to the rear for assisting with reversing too, or indeed using your rear winch to get a fellow traveller out of trouble! The whole exterior is geared to functionality AND aesthetics, and they are surprisingly enjoyable to live with.
The interior is well equipped with twin sports seats to the front, and a bench style seat in the rear should you want to take some friends to the beach (or a dog!). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are installed on a central touch screen along with a stereo with bluetooth and quad speakers, so you are well connected and entertained during any journey – as if you need any further entertainment than actually driving this thing! The interior is of course, familiar to Range Rover Classic fans and is presented as it should be with the various controls for heat and ventilation. It is actually a slightly nicer interior than HQ’s Yellow Dakar, which is good to note.
Out on the road, as one can imagine, this Land Rover Dakar has great road presence. The 200TDI engine, coupled with Power Steering and Coil Springs actually mean that this “buggy style” vehicle actually drives just like a modern car. There is plenty of power, with light steering and power brakes so it actually feels light on the controls despite its size. One of our young female employees was tasked with taking this out for photos, and she remarked just how nice and light everything felt despite the overall looks. It can be driven by anyone with a manual license without much more to be said on the matter. In short, it is a hoot to drive, and easy at that.
If you were to build up this vehicle to this specification, it would amount to more than the price we are asking – firstly, you need to source a good donor vehicle and purchase this and then you need to buy all the various components, including the optional extras from Dakar to put this together. The basic kit is not cheap, but the extras, such as the bull bar and other trim pieces, push the cost up significantly. Then, it is a case of stripping and rebuilding which is no mean feat and would be prohibitively expensive if you paid a professional outfit to conduct the works. This then, is a ready built, physically available and up-together example ready for immediate delivery and to jump in and enjoy. With additional canvas roof and friction fit doors, this vehicle can be used no matter the weather (or the temperature).
So, you love the way this looks, but want to convince your partner it is a good idea… because you don’t really need it – but you do want it! Here is what you say – it is rare, it is cool, it is reasonably unique, it is just a modern car, it will be great in the summer, even better in the winter, it won’t depreciate like a modern Range Rover and it will be tax and MOT exempt in a few years time – oh, and it is cheaper than a Series 3 – try that!
