Here for sale is my beautiful, time warp 1979 Saab 99 GL super automatic in original Saab alabaster yellow. A class act! I have owned her for 6 years and bought her from the Saab specialist “2 Stroke to Turbo” near London. She was a London car until I bought her in 2017. She still has her original Jack, dealer number plates and Saab 99 blue rubber mats. She has a genuine low mileage of 37, 000 I have all her old MOT’s back to her first one in 1982. Although she is tax and MOT exempt, she has a current MOT until July 2024 with no advisories.
The car is in very good condition with a solid body and has been well cared for and always garaged. She runs very ably and smoothly on her unburstable Saab 1985cc engine with twin Stromberg carburettors (Super) developing 108 horsepower. The BorgWarner 35 automatic transmission is very smooth for a car from this era with good kickdown if needed. She averages 28-30mpg.
Model History
The “99” is becoming very rare now. It ran from 1968 to 1984 and was a gamechanger for Saab with eminent development potential. It is the great grandparent of the Saab 9-3. It ran in tandem with the new 900 (launched in 1979) for another 5 years such was its popularity and reliable reputation. It was constantly developed and among other ’99 innovations, introduced side impact beams to the world in 1972, 20 years before other mainstream marques employed this safety feature.
Although I am the 5th registered owner, I’m really the 3rd as the supplying garage registered her new, probably as a demonstrator car and then “2 stroke to Turbo” when they acquired her. The first private owner was from 1979-2001. Second owner 2001-2015, then myself from 2017 after “2 stroke to turbo” ownership. I have the V5’s for all these owners and original bill of sale.
Overhaul and Maintenance
“2 Stroke to Turbo” completely overhauled the car under their ownership, removing the engine and replacing all the seals including the rear main oil seal, crank pulley oil seal and engine to gearbox gasket. Her carburettors were balanced, callipers stripped and rebuilt, and a full service carried out including a new set of tyres.
Under my ownership I have had her regularly serviced with these additional jobs done. A new rear half of the exhaust replaced. A new rear offside calliper replaced, and a new set of tyres replaced this year as her old ones were 8 years old (last replaced by “2 stroke to Turbo”). I had a good set of “continental” tyres fitted. A new front wheel bearing was also fitted this year. I have kept all the old bills for the new owner.
She also comes will her original handbook, spare key and sales brochure.
I’ve only covered 5500 miles in her over the last 6 years, mainly pleasure drives and shows. Last year she won the cup at the G. T. M (Grampian Transport Museum) “How many left” show amid stiff competition. She really is a true survivor and a joy to drive. I really hope the car goes to a home where she’ll be garaged and cherished as she has been from new. For a serious buyer my local garage will put her on the ramp to show how good she is underneath. Please note that I’m located near Elgin on the Moray Firth in Scotland and factor in the distance if your south of the border.
