1956 Standard Super 10. Early enough to still have the attractive ‘moustache’ grill. It’s about as cute as anything on four wheels.
The photos flatter it. It’s a scruffy old thing, but is incredibly reliable. My everyday car for six years, it always starts, and has never overheated.
The seat facings are good, and the carpets are recent, so it’s a nice place to sit.
The tyres are also recent , along with the battery and some brake cylinders and linings, and a master cylinder. The engine is absolutely sweet.
I suppose it’s a traditional old banger. It performed taxi duties at the Goodwood Revival a few years ago, and people loved it. It gets the most extraordinary amount of attention on the road.
It could do with the rear suspension bushes renewing on one side, but the parts are cheap and available. The steering box and idler could be better, but I have the parts for reconditioning.
Tax, MOT and ULEZ exempt, it does 40+ MPG, and even in London costs just £55 a year to insure. Is there cheaper car to run?
You can spend what you like, but you won’t find many cars with more charm!
