Triumph TR4 "Live Axle", RHD, 1965, 74kW / 100HP
Original British RHD TR4
In it´s technical layout, the Triumph TR4, introduced in 1961, widely mated with it´s predecessor TR3A -- box-type frame with crossbeams, independent suspension at front, rear live axle with leaf springs, long-stroke 4 cylinder wetliner engine and 4 speed transmission with optional overdrive.
However, the appearance changed massively: Giovanni Michelotti did a thoroughgoing job and made a modern and extraordinarily attractive sports car out of the almost pre-war-styled TR3A roadster. Large 15 inch wheels, strongly contoured wheel arches, a power bulge atop of the long bonnet and a short rear with implied fin tails -- without any question, the new TR4 had a strong presence in the 1960´s -- and has it until today.
Our TR4 was manufactured in 1965 -- shortly before the TR4A with it´s redesigned chassis and independent rear suspension emerged.
This car belongs to the minority of original RHD TR4´s. Until 1999 the Triumph was registered in the UK and had been fully restored by "Marksdanes Restorations Ltd." in Somerset.
It´s condition is convincing. The TR is fully free of any corrosion and benefits from a very consistent, accurately fitted body with good gaps and evenness.
The darkgreen paintwork almost lacks any signs of use and enthuses with deep gloss and clean surface.
Also the interior deserves the attribute "Top Condition". Seats, carpets, door cards and dashboard -- the whole lot looks close to new and demonstrates the TR was barely used after it´s restoration. The dashboard (standard is white paintwork) has been upgraded by a burl wood application.
The torquey 4-cylinder engine clearly dominates the driving experience. With it, the TR is properly motorized: Strong pull and powerful acceleration in any speed range.
In addition to that, the TR4 provides a sensitive and exact steering (rack and pinion / in opposite to the TR3 worm and peg), a firm 4-speed gearbox and strong brakes with discs at front.
Driving a TR4 is intensely, emotional and demanding -- a genuine British roadster!
