Triumph Spitfire MK2
This Spitfire was extensively restored 25yrs ago, it has been garaged for the majority of the time since, obviously there are some signs of use over the intervening years but the Triumph has been well maintained.
The restoration of the bodywork included a new bonnet, front valence, main floor pans, sills, door skins, rear wings, rear valence, boot floor, boot lid and a rust free American screen frame. The car was then repainted in its original powder blue.
The interior was retrimed in Matador red, with the seats being in leather .
New carpets in royal blue were fitted.
Mechanically the car has been significantly upgraded. The lacklustre 1147cc engine was replaced with a fully rebuilt 1300cc engine, lightened & balanced , fast road camshaft, big valve cylinder head & raised compression ratio. The Larger 1&1/ 2 twin SU carburettors, free flow air filters full stainless steel sports exhaust system and manifold have been fitted.
In addition a larger cored radiator and an oil cooler have also been added as have electronic ignition, alternator and electric fuel pump.
The original 3 rail 3 syncro gearbox has been replaced with a 4 syncro 3rail gearbox ( not the heavy later 1500 spitfire gearbox) and has been fitted with the stronger J type overdrive, both units were rebuilt and an early factory aluminium bell housing fitted.
The differential was replaced and the propshaft balanced.
The suspension has all been rebuilt, using superflex bushes, new bearing’s, driveshafts, UJS, splined hubs and wire wheels, the front up rights , trunnions & top ball joints were also replaced.
The front springs are up graded ( stiffer ) and fitted with adjustable AVO shocks, & a stiffer anti roll bar.
The rear spring is the later swing spring and has Koni shocks.
The brakes were all rebuilt, with the calipers replaced using the later larger ones.
I hope I have remembered all the major work carried out, but the end result is a quicker more stable better handling free revving fun car that has been to Paris and back in a weekend, completed the Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Run (2000 miles in 48 hrs).
Although the above events (& other weekend jaunts ) contain long stretches on motorways the Spitfire spends much of its time pottering around locally.
The car was put away last October, & this March, once the petrol was up fired up first time.
I have known the car for almost 30 yrs, I bought it after the restoration, kept for a few years, sold it to a friend & bought it back again around 5 yrs ago. I’m selling the car only because I was able to buy a very special 2. 6 litre injection engined MK1 spitfire 2yrs ago, & reluctantly this car has to go .
