Description
VS Garage presents a splendid example of the Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT first series (1. 8) from 1974, ASI homologated (gold badge).
From the information obtained, the car underwent a conservative restoration about 15 years ago and to this day remains pristine and free from signs of corrosion.
The car is matching numbers (external colour, interior trim, original engine) and has been subjected by us to meticulous mechanical maintenance:
• Full engine service with filters, replacement of gearbox oil, replacement of brake fluid;
• Removal of the oil sump for cleaning and replacement of the gasket;
• Spark plugs replaced;
• Brake pump replaced;
• Rear calipers overhauled and pads replaced;
• Steering tie-rod ends replaced;
• Conservative restoration of the wooden steering wheel;Presented in 1974, two years after the Alfetta saloon. Its aim was to carry on the heritage of the hugely successful Giulia GT and to compete in the sports coupé segment like the BMW 2002.
The revolutionary design is the work of Giorgetto Giugiaro and his fledgling Italdesign.
The Alfetta GT appeared with a wedge-shaped line very modern for the era, characterised by a long bonnet and a highly inclined windscreen. It was one of the first sports cars to popularise the two-box coupé configuration with a rear hatch and the distinctive short tail inspired by aerodynamic considerations.
⚙️ Revolutionary mechanics: The Transaxle
What made it truly special was its refined mechanical layout, derived from the saloon Alfetta:
Transaxle layout: to perfectly balance weights and improve handling, the car adopted a premium mechanical scheme: the engine was in the front, while the five-speed gearbox and the clutch were positioned at the rear in unison with the differential (rear-wheel drive).
Suspension: It used a sophisticated De Dion rear axle and front double-wishbone suspension, solutions that offered excellent road-holding and sporting character.
Engines: Initially launched with the classic and high-performance Alfa Romeo 1. 8-litre light-alloy twin-cam engine (122 hp).
