This beautiful 1972 MGB bought by me from a specialist dealer in 2019 has covered only 5, 000 miles since its major restoration completed in 2015. The car was restored to a very high standard by a well-regarded MGOC member over three years. The bare shell was spit mounted for detailed repairs done to a professional standard as follows –
The car was completely stripped and mounted on a rotisserie device for the bodywork to be restored. New panels were fitted and professionally welded in place, namely –
• Both Floor Pans
• Full cills including castle rails and jack points
• Both rear outer wings
• Both door skins
• Both front wing lower sections
Any minor body imperfections were lead loaded and flatted, prior to being resprayed in 2 pack paint. (MG Midnight Blue BLVC12)
“Milspec” corrosion inhibitor was applied to all cavities, and the underside was undersealed.
As a result, there is no rust on this car and the panels and chassis, and paintwork are all excellent.
The engine (an earlier ‘Ivor Searle’ recon unit, with a later Oselli head) was stripped and inspected, and the following work was done –
• New - Camshaft, Rocker Shaft, Cam followers and timing chain
and tensioner were fitted
• A newly reconditioned overdrive gearbox was fitted
plus a new clutch
• The SU carbs were overhauled and tuned and work as new
• ‘Magnetronic’ ignition was installed
The cylinder head - an Oselli unleaded uprated exchange, was fitted in 2009 and did not require any work having only done around 1000 miles at that point.
As the car was rebuilt, the following additional work was done –
• Complete windscreen / frame restored by a specialist company
• New Electronic fuel pump fitted
• Conversion to single 12-volt battery
• New copper brake pipes all throughout
• New callipers / discs / pads and shoes
• New tyres including spare
• Complete restoration of the ‘Rostyle’ wheels
• Rebuilt master cylinders and new slaves
• New rear road springs
• Full stainless-steel exhaust
• All new hoses/ pipes/ clips/ clamps
• New hood fitted to restored frame
• All new carpets and trims
• New leather seat covers fitted to rebuilt seat frames and foams
• Stripped and repainted dash panel, which is unmarked
Since that restoration work, the car has been regularly serviced and maintained and most recently it has had the rear suspension changed to MGOC parabolic leaf springs and GAZ telescopic shockers, giving a much-improved ride. (An article about this work on this car was featured in the MGOC magazine in January 2023) it also has a new wood rimmed steering wheel, a new centre console panel, a new Bluetooth stereo and a USB outlet.
The car has a history file with records going back 43 years, including MOT and SORN records for almost every year, which verify the mileage at 61. 6k since 1982 when the reconditioned engine was fitted. The information in this file along with selected photographs has been pulled together into a printed hardback book for keepsake with the car going forwards. (See photo’s)
Since its restoration the car has been used for club runs and days out in the green lanes and remains in truly outstanding condition and quality, in its original 1972 guise - nothing needs doing.
It has an MOT until April 17’th 2026 and was serviced just prior to that MOT and had all the flexible fuel pipes renewed as a precaution . It has a security battery isolator and two sets of keys. The MOT noted a minor oil leak which has been traced to the Rocker cover gasket and remedied.
It drives superbly and is ready to be enjoyed. £13, 850
