Description
Searching for a car with true character and individual flair? We're selling our Saab 96 V4. Distinctive Swedish engineering, comfort and surprising-ish performance plus a bit of quirky charm with a dollop of thoughtful design.
The car starts, runs well and stops nicely. Column shifting gears give it a fairly unique feel and the freewheel setting is pretty special.
The car has had a Zeibart anti corrosion treatment but there's a wee bit of rust at the bottom of the doors and the paint is generally showing signs of age (55yrs!), it might polish up better than we have it. Below the filler cap some fuel leaked when parked on a hill and that removed some paint - you can see it in some of the pictures. You can also see some discoloration on the bonnet if you zoom in. There's been a DIY repair to a scrape above the rear wheel, which would not be to everyone's liking but I always thought it looked authentic.
There's a slight rub between the driver's door and the front wing.
The bumpers are in great condition. I think they're stainless steel rather than chrome.
It has a towbar but we have never used it. I liked the idea of getting a Saabo caravan one day.
Mechanically it's fine and starts every time. The previous owner upgraded the ignition timing which probably helps.
A previous owner added a rev counter.
The upholstery on the seats has perished somewhat and we have red fabric blankets covering them.
It has an 8 track player and one cartridge.
For most of its life (1970-2008) it belonged to one person and his name is on the bottom of the number plates. I think he was involved in the Saab Owners Club. It's got an original grille badge for the SOC.
We have some boxes of spares including a spare windscreen and wheel hubs. There's an indicator stalk that I planned to swap in as the current one doesn't stay clicked on.
We have three sets of keys for it. We tend to use the newer ones but have the originals.
It has a 'Formuling' badge on passenger side under a Saab badge. It's also has a pop up sun roof and some genuine Saab mats.
Bought from a private seller. We bought it from a mechanic who had it for a short period of time and he bought it from a family member of the original owner.
It is a lot of fun to drive and the V4 engine has a good but subtle burble sound.
