Backwhen I was 21, I was given the chance to drive a 1986 UR Quattro from North Wales to Cirencester. It blew my mind. Some cars bury themselves deep into your soul; at that point you know one day you'll find yours.
My search began about 15 years ago. I knew I wanted a 1986 car, and one that I could keep and use indefinitely. I wanted it to be super low mileage but not a concourse car that I'd hide away.
And then this one appeared showing 51k miles on the clock and a fully stamped service book. It had gone into storage in 1990 to reappear in 2014. I bought it in 2017 and have cherished it since.
It isn't a concourse car, but it is a good and original WR; now with just over 53k miles on the clock.
I haven't shied away from spending money on it, in my role as custodian. As I write I can't think what next I'd do. There are a few age-related marks but nothing that warrants a respray. What I should be doing is taking it on a long European road trip through the mountains. I had always planned on doing exactly that.
Unfortunately life has a habit of tripping you up and dropping in headwinds. That's now my dynamic. As such, we're relocating, which means downsizing and losing the garaging. As a show of commitment to ensuring this new start works, I am letting my beloved Quattro go.
