OVERVIEW
Here I have my pride and joy up for sale - a first generation 1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL. For those of you who don't know the model intimately, this this is an early pre-facelift model; long wheel base with the M117 engine - 5 litre petrol single over-head cam V8. Selling due to needing more space for another car as I already have two.
Unlike many for sale, this is ready to jump in and drive. It has been well cared for with extensive history and a recent clean MOT and service. Due to the age, it does not legally require any more tests. Additionaly, from next year (April 1st 2026), it is eligible to be classified as a historical vehicle meaning ULEZ (or any clean air zone) and VED (Road tax) exemption.
POTENTIAL RENTAL INCOME
During my ownernship, I have rented it out for a number of films and photoshoots, most notably, BBC's 'The Gold'. These jobs are lucrative so something to think about for your ownership.
MAINTENANCE
Too much maintenance to list here but the key failure points of this model have been addressed, making it extremely reliable. I have taken it on many trips including to the continent and never had any worries about it letting me down. Very comforatble to drive with plenty of power.
The main issues on these cars tend to be vaccum leaks and issues with fuel distribution. Additionally, idle speed issues are extremely common. None of these issue are present due to the following maintenace. I also have a folder full of receipts that covers all other maintenance including brakes and suspension
Vaccum system
- refreshed rubber hoses and new fuel distribution boot
- new vaccum pump
- replaced broken central locking lines
- replace broken door lock actuator
Ignition system
- new OVP relay
- new districutor cap and rotor arm
- large capacity Yuasa battery
- new spark plugs
- refurbished idle speed control module
- new alternator
Fuel system
- tank cleaned and strainer replaced
- new fuel filter
- all braided hoses and fitting replaced
BAD POINTS
Two issue have cropped up in the last few weeks that will need attention
- requires new nearside ABS sensor
- instrument cluster needs repaired/ replaced
