Description
This is that rarest of things, a good, solid Mazda MX5 Mk2. Its becoming so hard to buy a good Mk2 and its very easy to buy a bad one which is a shame as a well sorted Mk2 is just terrific to drive. This is a particularly lovely example and it was supplied new in February 2001 by Whichford Mazda in Maidenhead and its had three owners since then. It also relatively rare as its one of the Jasper Conran limited edition cars. Only 100 were produced in Platinum Silver – this is number 76/ 100 though DVLA records suggest that only around 30 still survive.
Based on an MX5 1. 8iS, the Jasper Conran edition had very different trim to the standard car. The seats and door cards are beautifully trimmed in red Connolly leather while the Wilton carpets are much thicker and of a lovely quality. Even the boot is trimmed in red Wilton carpet while the inside of the glovebox is trimmed in red carpet too. The steering wheel is thicker than standard and is finished in silver and black leather and much of the interior trim – door handles, centre console, handbrake handle etc is finished in aluminium silver. It definitely makes the car feel very special.
Before I tell you more, let me tell you about Goodwood Sportscars and why should you buy from me:
While I'm a car dealer, I consider myself to be a car enthusiast above all else. I'll only sell cars that actual interest me as an enthusiast. I live and breath quick cars and have sold literally thousands of performance cars over a forty year period. I have competed in various forms of motorsport including the Scottish Hillclimb Championship (in an MX5 of course). I've had many thousands of MX5s through my hands and know their strengths and weaknesses well and I'm pretty good at spotting a good MX5 and at making one work to the best of its ability. Back to our car: the Jasper Conran editions also have unique 15” BBS alloy wheels, all in good condition on this one and fitted with decent tyres. The rest of the specification includes electric windows and mirrors, power steering, central locking, ABS brakes, stainless steel sill tread plates and twin airbags.
This particular car has covered 114060 miles and has a full service history. The original owner’s handbook pack is still with the car and the service book shows 11 stamps plus another 5 or 6 separate receipts for services along with a big collection of old MOTs and receipts for work done over the years.
Bodywork is excellent: the rear wheel arches and part of the rear sills were cut out and replaced with new panels within the last few weeks with all work carried out by our MX5 bodywork specialist. Everything – wheel arches, sills, wings, floors etc are sound and solid with no rust. The infamous front chassis rails were replaced a couple of years ago and again, these are utterly solid. The underside has recently been cleaned and then treated with Dynax. Paintwork is very good indeed and its a super looking car. The soft top is black vinyl and is in very good condition with no cracks or splits and it has a heated glass window.
Inside, everything works as it should and everything is in good order. There is some minor wear showing on the driver’s seat bolster but no holes or rips. Carpets and trim is all in clean condition and it has its original red carpet mats. The original stereo has since been replaced with a modern Kenwood unit that has Bluetooth etc and this sounds great. The aerial shown in the photos is about to be replaced with a modern stubby one which will work better. It also has a wind blocker fitted.
I’m guessing its partly down to its extensive service history that this drives so well. Performance is strong and it will cruise at motorway+ speeds all day long if required. The clutch and gearbox are typical MX5 in feel i. e. just perfect. Rear brake discs and pads have been replaced quite recently too. Handling is excellent too and its just brilliant to drive on a good winding road. Ride quality is also excellent and there are no odd noises or rattles. Its genuinely lovely to drive. Its just been serviced with new oil and filter, new air filter, new spark plugs and we also replaced the windscreen and clutch master cylinder.
There are two keys and its MOT tested until July 2026. In fact whenever I prepare a car for sale, I use my own MX5-based checklist which covers 80+ points and ensures that even the detail stuff is checked and any issues spotted and attended to. This includes all sorts of things such as hood catches, drain holes, electric windows, door locks, condition of coolant hoses right down to the state of the cigarette lighter. It means the car is fit for purpose and should behave and drive just as a good MX5 should. As a sign of how confident I am in the condition of the car, if the asking price of £4550 is paid, I'll include 6 months warranty administered by Warranty First.
I'm based in Berwick on Tweed, near the Scottish Border and I can collect any prospective buyer from the local train station or I can arrange to have the car delivered by a trusted transport company at extra cost. I’m well known in the MX5 world and know these cars well. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions – if you are genuinely interested, you’ll have plenty and I’m happy to talk about MX5s all day. I'm also happy to give you an honest description and if there any faults or issues with the car, I much prefer to tell you up front, so you are clear about what you are buying.
This is a rare and particularly nice example of a Mk2 MX5 and while you could happily use this every day, it feels special enough to keep for weekends and holidays. Its well sorted and ready to be enjoyed straight away.
