Description

For Sale
1972 MG BGT Rolling Shell plus many parts and 1971 donor car.

#PLEASE NOTE - I have uncovered the car today and the surface has suffered a little bit of condensation having been under a cover in my back garden over the winter. It is only minor and hasn’t affected the structure of the shell in any way. Just means it will require extra surface prep. The seams are all still in very good condition. There is no serious rust and no bubbling anywhere. I have added extra photos to better describe. Please study them. As a result I have dropped the price to reflect this#

#Also in answer to a couple of questions I have received… you don’t have to take the donor car if you don’t want it! #

I purchased this shell from an old chap about 6 years ago with the express intention of resehelling my old 71 GT. The seller was an ex engineer but due to being senior in years had decided it was too much work for him. He had completed much of the body work and had gotten as far as priming it. The shell was kept in dry storage for 10 years but when he lost his storage, it sat on his driveway for a while. Many of the parts were stored in his back garden exposed to the elements.

I am now considering also moving it on due to being very time poor with the responsibilities of a young family and full time job. I’m thinking of searching for a road ready car instead. For the first 3 years it was garaged and I completed some more work on the body and stripped some of the parts out of it. I lost my garage and so the shell was moved to a shipping container and then I lost that so it is currently sitting in my back garden under a tarp. I kept most of the original parts but discarded the items that were beyond repair such as some of the interior and ancillaries. However, I also have much of the ‘other’ car stashed away. Some parts are missing though but if you know your MGs most of the car is readily available from Moss or Mg Owners Club etc.

As stated I had planned on reshelling my old car and building the GT that I always wanted. I chose this shell mainly because it was a chrome bumper, full length sunroof model. With the amount of time available to me, I reckon it will take me 10 years to complete!!!

The ‘donor’
I have owned this car since the mid 90s. I rebuilt it with new panels and a cheap respray. I drove it for many years before laying it up. It never really made it back onto the road and now it’s rusting away hence the reshell plan. Most salvageable parts have already been removed except for the engine, gearbox, overdrive, rear bumper and fuel tank etc. This car is included in the sale.

Between the two cars most parts are there and many are duplicated. Some parts are in good condition some are in a bad state. Countless boxes of bits! The better engine is in the donor car. The shell has been sitting under a tarp during this very wet winter so I m expecting it to have some condensation surface rust on it. When the rain finally stops I plan to uncover it and post some detailed pics. The shell is solid and straight and not far off being ready for paint. The floor pans are a bit lumpy and warped but are solid. I planned to leave these in place. I also have battered aluminium bonnet.

Parts that I know are not present or are not part of the sale are as follows -
Minilight wheels
Door cards
Front grille
Bonnet trim
Front and rear screen aluminium trim
71 dash and clocks
71 speaker housing
71 registration and V5 as I plan to transfer this onto whatever I buy next.

That’s about all I can say. I’m hoping someone might see the potential in this project like I did. This is most definitely a project but with much of what is needed to give you good head start. Both cars will need trailering away.

Please study the pics as they form part of the description. Feel free to ask questions. No warranty is implied or given. Sold as seen. One car is located in Exmouth, the other in Budleigh Salterton, Devon.
Payment by cash or BACs and cars won’t be released until full payment is received. Sensible offers invited and considered.

Thanks for looking.
