Description

DHJ 61B - 1964 Land Rover Series 2A 2. 25L Petrol Utility Canvas Top

Available for sale is this well-loved Land Rover Series 2A, powered by a sweet 2. 25L petrol engine and benefiting from many new parts, including an Exmoor trim canvas hood.

First registered in April 1964, this vehicle has clearly lived a varied life since then. Although I’m not completely convinced of any military connection, the front axle appears to be reinforced, the engine is painted duck-egg blue and the bumper is wearing additional bumperettes. Although clearly not original, with its patchwork shade of deep blue, the car makes quite a convincing ex-RAF lookalike.

Recently serviced, the car benefits from brand new Michelin XZL tyres on LWB rims, new door bottoms and tops, a new starter motor, new clutch hydraulics and a new Exmoor trim canvas hood in sand. Although this is not the most original vehicle for sale, it has clearly been well loved in its life, the history file shows photos of an extensive rebuild at some point in the recent past and many receipts for works and parts. Having worked on the car a fair bit recently, I haven’t come across a single nut or bolt that hasn’t been copper greased - not something many Land Rovers could claim!

The chassis is completely solid and fully painted in a smart glass flake style chassis paint, both footwells are solid as is the top rail around the vents. The rear crossmember is in good solid shape, fitted with a tow bar and trailer electrics.

The 2. 25L petrol engine fires up well with a touch of choke and runs really sweetly. Driving the Land Rover really does cement the notion that this car has been well sorted over the years. The steering is relatively light and precise and the gearbox changes through the gears without any unwelcome noises. The engine is fitted with a reverse SU carb arrangement, which no-doubt adds a few crucial horse power…

The bodywork is quite straight, albeit painted various shades of blue. The new wheels, doors and bonnet are painted LR Oxford Blue. Clearly over the years much of the car has been painted in differing shades. With a wipe over of an oily rag, the mix of paint shades really suits the car and adds to the overall patina.

Inside the cab, delux front seats and a cubby box are fitted along with a heater and Series 3 style wiper motor. Although some additional gauges have been fitted, this has been done whilst maintaining the original Series 2A dash and central instrument panel. Sun visors complete the interior appointments. The rear is fitted with a permanently mounted military toolbox and spare wheel. The canvas hood is in good water-proof condition with no rips, tears or staining.

To summarise, this Land Rover is in great mechanical condition, despite the mismatched paint. Wanting nothing of note before being put to use as a weekend toy or farm run around. Use as is and enjoy, improve over time to take this car to the next level. MOT and Tax exempt, V5 available in hand.
