Description
I bought the Scimitar (which had been a stranded project) in October 2024 from a dealer in the Netherlands. It had already been imported and fitted with a Dutch registration in 2009. Subsequently, work began to convert it from right-hand drive to left-hand drive. Unfortunately at the time they didn’t get further than removing the steering wheel and dashboard. However many parts had already been replaced, such as Koni shocks and springs, a stainless steel fuel tank, brake pads, discs, ball joints, wishbone rubbers, etc., and there was a refurbished steering box included.
In 2024 I started the restoration and the conversion from right-hand drive to left-hand drive. The bodyshell was dismantled, the chassis de-rusted and repaired where necessary, sill members and rear crossmember replaced. Then the bodyshell was reassembled and customised to my taste. All the steel in the doors and bodyshell has been replaced with stainless steel. This Scimitar now has much more legroom on the driver's side and far less (poor and flimsy quality) plastic on both the interior and exterior. It has the nose, door handles, dashboard and rear from the SE5, simply because I prefer how they look. The centre console and dashboard are made from sturdy plywood and then veneered. The stainless-steel bumpers, tyres and door handles are new.
So it’s effectively a 'big SE5'.
The interior has also been completely renewed and fitted with leather seats, a rear bench and a Nardi steering wheel.
The engine and overdrive gearbox are in very good condition. The exhaust manifolds have been replaced with headers. There is a new carburettor and electric fuel pump fitted.
The Scimitar has electric windows, a new classic radio with Bluetooth and is supplied with a new MOT: the latest one, because after that it will be MOT-exempt as it is over 50 years old.
In short, a lovely English GTE with a thick but economical engine and a nice dark sound.
