Description

1957 Sunbeam S7
“CARROSSEL MOTO SQUADRON” Portuguese Display Team bike

In 1957 this bike was one of the special S7 motorcycles painted in metallic grey with whitewall tyres that were supplied to the Portuguese Government to provide an escort for Queen Elizabeth 2 as she toured Portugal as part of her post Coronation World Tour.

The bikes were ridden by members of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment of the National Guard. After the visit 18 of these bikes were then used by these elite riders who were called the “Carrossel Moto Squadron" (equivalent of our White Helmet display team) to carry out public acrobatic display routines across the country. See attached photographs and have a look at the many YouTube clips.

This is one of perhaps two or three (?) display bikes that have found their way back to the UK.
There is verification documentation from Stewart Engineering confirming the export of this frame number to Norte Importadora in Lisbon. A comprehensive set of photographs show the original metallic grey paint and appropriate mudguard holes to mount the various support platforms fitted to the bikes.

This bike has been subject to a fastidious total nut and bolt restoration to a display standard. Extensive photos show the complete dis-assembly of the engine, gearbox, wheel rebuild, wiring etc. A complete chronological record is available to verify this together with a sequential file of all receipts from Stewart Engineering and other specialist suppliers and engineers etc. etc.

Various polished stainless steel parts have been fabricated. Worthwhile modifications have been added including lightened clutch, roller release bearing, Stewart breather and sump spacer, LED bulbs

The final restoration was completed after COVID and the bike has only covered 242 miles since. It is an easy starter, has a relaxed riding position and the rear plunger suspension, adjustable seat suspended by a long spring concealed in the top tube, give a surprisingly compliant ride aided by the generous tyres.

Offered at a fraction of restoration cost. Please contact me if you would like more details or photographs.
