The Austin Special Sports 4. 0 Ltr. 6-cylinder described here was first registered in England on 13 February 1948 as a two-seater convertible. Research indicates that this is a one-off vehicle built by Austin. Of particular interest is the chassis number DS7, which this special model has held since its initial registration. This period marked the beginning of a new era for the automotive industry, which was recovering from the hardships of the Second World War. Inspired by pre-war vehicles such as the Bentley Speed Six, Aston Martin, Mercedes SSK, Lagonda and other ‘elephant-class’ sports cars, mostly with a wheelbase of 2. 90 m to approx. 3. 80 m (as four-seaters), this unique Austin Special Sports classic was created, measuring 4. 40 m in length, with a wheelbase of 3. 03 m and a raised dashboard height of 1. 40 m. The Austin ladder-frame chassis and axles largely correspond to those of the Bentley from that era. Because the 4-litre 6-cylinder in-line engine is robust and reliable, it was successfully used in various models over many years. With a single carburettor, it delivers approx. 120 hp and can develop over 150 hp with triple carburettors. A 4-speed manual gearbox transmits power to the rear axle. Over the course of its 77-year history, the body, which is welded to the chassis, has been restored and modified several times to bring it to its current condition. The dashboard is made of stainless steel and the seats are newly upholstered in genuine leather. The bonnet is made of aluminium and is held in place by two leather straps. The car’s base colour is British Racing Green (BRG). The vehicle has the English Vehicle Registration Document and was imported into Germany by a German dealer in 2013. I purchased the car from this dealer on 27 August 2014.
