Description
Classic 4 Door 1300 SPI Mini (Historic 1978)
Registered as a historic vehicle: 1978 4 door Mini. A rare and practical classic that’s been steadily recommissioned over the last three years, with the focus on getting the mechanicals and structure right first. The intention was then to strip and respray, but house renovations have taken priority and the car now needs a new home.
Background
I have spent around three years working through the car and putting right the mechanical and structural items needed to make it a usable, dependable classic. It can be driven as it is, but it would also respond really well to cosmetic improvement (notably paintwork and glass) to bring it up to the next level.
Interesting detail
There is an unusual “H” embossed on the door upright. We were told this may relate to a coachbuilder called Hoopers, but I’ve been unable to find anything definitive to confirm that history. The story we were given is that only two were built like this, so I’m including the detail for completeness and would welcome any knowledgeable input.
Work completed / recent parts
• New fuel pump
• New front calipers and discs
• Wheels and tyres have done approximately 1, 000 miles maximum
• Car originally came with 12" wheels; currently set up with 10" wheels (my preference)
• Several components under the bonnet have been replaced/ renewed over the course of the recommissioning
• Exhaust has been rebuilt
Practicality
The rear has twin ISOFIX points, making it a genuinely usable classic for family trips while still keeping the character of a traditional Mini.
Condition
The car can be used straight away. As with any vehicle of this age, it isn’t concours and there are cosmetic areas that could be improved. If you’re looking for a usable classic now, with scope to enhance the finish over time (e. g., fresh paint and new glass), this is a solid base.
Known issue
None of the doors lock at present. The only key I have is for the ignition.
Cosmetic notes
There are the usual age related scuffs and scrapes you’d expect on a classic of this era, consistent with use and the car’s age.
Paperwork / photos
We have plenty of photos showing restoration work carried out prior to us purchasing the car, and I’m happy to share these with genuine buyers to show the progress and what has been done.
