Description

Following Jaguar's withdrawal from racing in late 1956, a number of completed and partially completed D-Type racing cars remained unsold. To recoup part of the investment, the Jaguar XKSS was built from unsold former Type D race cars and is one of the brand's rarest models. For cosmetic, comfort and legal reasons, numerous modifications were needed to transform a simple D-Type, a race car, into a street-legal passenger car. These included omitting the large fin behind the driver, adding a full-width windscreen, a passenger door, side windows on both the driver and passenger doors, a rudimentary folding fabric roof, chromed front and rear bumpers, XK140 taillight units high up on the wings and thin chrome strips on the edges of the headlight caps. In addition, a complete interior came. Of the street version of the Jaguar D-Type racing car, 16 examples were built and sold at the time. Almost all of them were exported to the United States. One of them was owned by actor Steve McQueen.

The XKSS is adored by collectors who appreciate its rarity and its price tag has risen. A correct example from that era now costs around £10 million In 2016, Jaguar produced a new series of 9 XKSS 'Continuation' cars, which are unfortunately not suitable for public roads. These sold for more than £1 million each. This makes replicas the most affordable way to join the XKSS club, with Reynard Motorsport designing a backbone chassis for them. Adrian Reynard built his first racing car in 1973 as a student project while working as a project engineer at British Leyland. He is one of the most successful engineers in race car production and under his leadership, Reynard Motorsport grew to become one of the world's leading manufacturers of race car chassis. The body was made of aluminium or polyester and the degree of fidelity depends on the budget allocated to it. This incredible-looking replica Jaguar XK-SS roadster, has a Dutch registration number and states that it is a Jaguar XK-SS from 10 February 1964 with chassis number 303947DN. This chassis number matches a right-hand drive 1964 Jaguar Mk X.
The car features a handmade polyester body in the colour British Racing Green with a black leather interior and has an aluminium fuel tank and bulkhead.
The car's cockpit with the steering wheel on the right features a black dashboard with classic Jaguar Smiths instruments with a speedometer up to 290 km/ h and Moto Lita steering wheel with wooden trim.
The XK-SS is powered by a Jaguar 3. 8-litre six-in-line engine with three twin Weber carburettors, electronic 123 ignition, an automatic electric fan, Jaguar four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, Jaguar differential and an exhaust system with side exhaust and stainless steel heat shield.
The chassis has Jaguar double wishbone front suspension with adjustable coilover suspension and Jaguar 4-piston calipers with ventilated disc brakes, independent Jaguar rear suspension with adjustable coilover suspension and Jaguar inboard disc brakes. Detailed with chromed bumpers, XKSS emblems, removable side windows, leather bonnet retaining straps, aluminium classic flip-up fuel filler cap, proper-style headlights and number plate lights, black mohair convertible top and convertible top cover, Dunlop-style aluminium wheels with spinners and a luggage rack, this fantastic XKSS is a great pleasure to see and drive.
