Description
Austin Seven SWB Ulster. Built in the 1990’s as an accurate recreation based heavily on Chris Gould's book. All aluminium light weight body with cycle wings, aeroscreens and full tonneau cover. Suitable for drivers up to 6ft 2in. Same owner last 20 years.
1931 chassis with coupled 4 wheel cable brakes. Engine based on a 1929 crankcase and 3 speed gearbox with bacon slicer electric starter. Subtle modifications made using modern thinking.
Engine rebuilt including the following:
- Phoenix 1½ crank with jet fed lubrication
- Phoenix modern connecting rods with shell bearings
- High capacity oil pump and deep, finned alloy sump.
- Bored out to 60 over with new pistons
- Ported
- High compression head
- Large inlet and exhaust valves with double springs
- Paul Bonewell camshaft
- Lightened flywheel with new clutch friction and springs
- Engine dynamically balanced
- Full flow oil filtration on remote head
Gearbox rebuilt by specialist Andy Bird with new bearings and higher first and second. This makes first a useable gear, and removes the large gap between second and third.
Correct Ulster type rear axle with high (4. 9) differential fitted. New rear axle bearings. 19inch wheels with Blockley tyres all round.
Replica external manifold and exhaust. Correct lowered front axle with cast eyes. Split sports front shock absorber. Radiator mounted temperature guage.
I have owned this Austin Ulster recreation for 20 years. It gets smiles and waves wherever it goes. Starts well even left over winter. Never failed to get home.
We have taken part in a number of UK events, including the Austin 7 Centenary event in 2022; multiple Bean Club Daffodil runs (Reading to Christchurch and back); Austin London to Brighton; BEN Windsor tour and multiple others. It has won awards at the BEN rally and the Henley Show car section.
The car is great fun to drive and always brings a smile. A good way to get into pre-war motoring in a fun and stylish way. Good spares availability and simple to work on.
