Recommissioned with many new parts
Engine, removed cylinder head and completely stripped it, cleaned all valves, checked all valve guides, minimal carbon build up, head cleaned and checked with an engineers straight edge, valves reground and checked for leakage, head rebuilt and valve clearances set to factory tolerance. Liners inspected, nip checked, pistons had minimal carbon build up and were cleaned, all correct tolerance within liners, liners had no lip whatsoever and no scoring, factory cross hatching evident. Decision to remove the head was most fortuitous as liner four had extensive congealed coolant surrounding it, would not have cleared flushing the block and would have created a hot spot around the liner leading to distortion and ultimate failure of the engine. New Gates timing belt fitted with a rebuilt tensioner and new bearing. Cam covers fitted with new gaskets and sealed with blue Hylomar. Overall the excellent general condition of the engine convinced me that the mileage of 37, 000 miles was correct and that it hadn’t run for 26 years resulting in the coolant blockage.
Cooling system. Radiator flushed and back flushed then pressure tested. Both fans were replaced with modern high flow fans, full hose set purchased from SJ, new jubilee clips, new otter switch lock wired, fan fail module checked, new thermostat and gasket fitted, heater matrix flushed and back flushed, water pump rebuilt, header tank removed and cleaned out, new coolant and system pressure checked after running up to temperature.
Fuel system. Twin Dellorto 45 DHLA carbs stripped, cleaned in ultrasonic cleaner, rebuilt with genuine Dellorto kits from Eurocarb, new O rings, set up and balanced with manometer. Flowlock valve tested, new Facet fuel pump, complete system checked for leaks. Fuel tank inspected with a borescope, completely rust free, new sender unit and new breather pipe routed through rear bumper, new in line fuel filters from tank to pump and from pump to carbs.
Braking system. Front discs replaced with new ones from SJ, callipers stripped and new stainless steel pistons fitted with a new seal kit, new braided hoses fitted with new copper pipe link to callipers. Rear brakes completely overhauled, diff removed and new wheel cylinders, copper cross over pipe, unions, bleed nipple, brake shoes and braided brake hose. Handbrake mechanism inspected and found to be in good order. Diff refitted with new mounting rubbers and studs. Diff oil drained and filled with new EP90. Propshaft UJ inspected and zero play found. Brakes bled with fresh fluid and no leaks found.
Transmission. BW65 three speed automatic serviced with new compatible oil and filter. Inhibitor switch found to have a snapped terminal on the ignition circuit, new switch fitted, kick down cable inspected, new gearbox mount fitted, Diff oil changed, no leaks from bearing seals, driveshaft UJ’s inspected and serviceable, rear wheel bearings serviceable with no play or noise. Bearing housings and hubs all in excellent condition. Front wheel bearings had just the correct amount of play but as I had these in stock I changed them anyway.
Suspension. Front and rear shocks and springs inspected and found to be in good serviceable condition, original Monroes, wishbones and radius arms inspected, light surface rust removed and painted, bushes have no play. Front ball joints replaced with new. Anti roll bar bushes replaced as were outer bushes to lower link, poly bushes fitted.
Wheels and tyres. New correct size tyres fitted, wheels painted in BMW starlight black, new wheel centres and new Lotus badged dust caps.
Interior. The interior was gutted, new Coverdale carpets fitted, new Dodo Mat sound deadening with new closed cell foam underlay, red leather seats reconnolised, new headlining fitted in grey alcantara, dash pods were recovered in high quality black leather.
Bodyshell, no accident damage, paintwork 8 out of 10, some chips from storage and pimples on passenger side front wing, smart repairs would bring it to near concours. The internal boot area has been retrimmed in black carpet with new plywood boot floor.
Electrics, all relays removed, terminals cleaned and tested, new voltage stabiliser, new bulbs, new higher rated alternator.
For a 46 year old car the finished example belies its years, the Eclat S2 is a very rare car to start with, less than 250 left the factory, very few were automatic. Offers considered, possible p/ x (MGB GT or Elan M100 up to value of £5K), view anytime in Buckden St Neots, just off A1. Looking for £14, 995, if I took my labour into consideration the car owes me in excess of £30K.
