1974 Saab 96 V4

Photos provided by the vendor

Highlights

  • Innovative streamlined styling, punctuated by a rather lovely shade of brown paint
  • An older bodywork restoration that continues to present really well
  • The vendor informs us that it runs sweetly and drives very nicely

The Appeal

With their innovative aerodynamic styling, curious engines and impressive handling, it’s no wonder the 96 proved such a successful car for Saab during its impressive twenty year production. Most notably, spot lamp and sponsor-laden 96s could be seen hurtling around rally stages at the capable hands of legends such as Erik Carlson and Stig Blomqvist.

We’re delighted to offer this very endearing 1974 example which features Ford’s unusual Taunus V4 driving the front wheels. With an older restoration weathering in nicely, this remains a presentable and usable example that apparently drives exceedingly well.

The History and Paperwork

  • Originally a home market Swedish car with fixed rear windows and rear seatbelts
  • First registered on 15th March, 1974
  • Arrived in the Netherlands in 2017 and has an age-related historic registration (39-YD-30)
  • APK (Dutch MOT equivalent) until 18th August 2024, after which it will qualify for exemption as it’ll be over fifty years old
  • The odometer currently indicates 41,475 kilometres although we’re unable to prove exactly how many kilometres it has covered
  • The vendor informs us that it was subject to a restoration some years ago

The Interior

  • Sporting RRS wood-rimmed steering wheel, which is a nice nod to Saab’s motorsport heritage
  • Complementing the many square feet of brown on the outside of this Saab, the interior too sticks to this most ‘70s of colours
  • Brown vinyl upholstery the door cards and seat bolsters
  • The seats feature cloth inserts which appear to remain in very good condition
  • While there is some wear to the upholstery in places, there’s nothing excessive to report and it still looks really smart
  • All the instrumentation and switchgear presents well and we understand that it functions correctly
  • The vendor points out the modern radio
  • So far as we could make out, the carpeting remains in good shape throughout the cabin and boot
  • The headlining too, appears in good condition for its age
  • All the trim continues to look really good

The Exterior

  • Resplendent in a fabulous shade of brown which is very appropriate for the period
  • Without doubt, some of the most interesting automotive styling ever conceived
  • The body appears very straight with no immediately noticeable dents or heavy scratches
  • We’re informed it was resprayed some years ago following some bodywork restoration
  • With the car up on a lift, we could see a few areas that had been patched over the years, as well as a little corrosion starting to creep back in
  • We noticed a small hole under the nearside rear wheel arch
  • Overall, the underside looks very smart
  • All the trims, bumpers and light lenses present well for their age with some gentle patina
  • The front and rear chrome windscreen trims have apparently been replaced recently
  • It sits upon black steel wheels with Saab hubcaps wearing the Saab logo

The Mechanics

  • 1,500cc V4 four-stroke engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox with column shift
  • Now converted to run on unleaded petrol
  • The vendor informs us that it has received lots of recent mechanical attention by a Saab specialist
  • Reportedly runs and drives really well

Summary

With lashings of ‘70s brown wherever you look, and healthy mechanicals, this is a fabulous little Saab.

It looks like a delightful example that’s not too shiny to use and enjoy without worrying about it.
