The Appeal
The Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza was one of the most successful racing cars of the pre-war era. Victorious at the Mille Miglia, Le Mans, and countless Grands Prix in the hands of legends like Nuvolari and Caracciola, the Monza occupies a place in motoring history that few machines can rival. Originals are vanishingly rare and seldom come to market.
This recreation offers the authentic 8C experience. The product of a four-year build project, it was conceived when the previous owner discovered a notable cache of historic Alfa Romeo components in England and set about constructing a complete car around them, sourcing additional period-correct parts from more than 14 countries. The chassis was built by Design Cast in New Zealand to the original Monza's factory specifications, using spring steel, hot-riveted and assembled with period-correct manufacturing techniques. At its heart sits a genuine 1938 Alfa Romeo 6C engine, sourced from Eastern Europe and rebuilt by Auto Restorations in New Zealand. During that rebuild, a supercharger was added along with numerous performance upgrades, resulting in a reported 185 hp at 5,000 rpm and, by all accounts, a stirring exhaust note.
The drivetrain is completed by a four-speed dog-box gearbox from Jim Stokes Workshops, a well-regarded British Alfa Romeo specialist, paired with a GM Holden clutch. The bodywork, finished in classic Alfa red, features an authentically styled cockpit with Jaeger instruments and contrasting brown leather upholstery. Period-correct Bosch lighting sits alongside discreetly integrated modern indicators, and an additional reserve fuel tank has been fitted.
Whether destined for road rallies, vintage racing events, or the concours lawn, this is a rare opportunity to experience the character and presence of one of the greatest pre-war racing cars.Bild 00003.jpg1.86 MB

The greatest compliment one can pay any recreation is that you really wouldn't know. That certainly applies here. Resplendent in Alfa Red and complete with the evocative 'Quadrifoglio Verde', this 8C transports you back to the 1930s when these cars dominated the great road races, early Grand Prixs, and Le Mans. The attention to detail is superb, from the safety-wired fastenings to the period chassis plates and Jaeger instruments. The level of finish is equally impressive, with highly polished paint and brightwork. There are minimal signs of use, beyond age-commensurate patina to the older components, adding an even greater sense of realism.

Modern electric fan fitted
Reported output of 185 hp at 5,000 rpm
185 horsepower in such a svelte chassis is not to be underestimated. It's no small wonder these cars proved so incredibly successful in the period. The supercharged 2.3-litre dual-overhead-cam straight-six that powered them was high-revving, and the unit fitted to this example boasts new camshaft drives, Jaguar valves, shell bearings, and four-bolt main bearing caps. The rebuild was carried out by Auto Restorations in New Zealand. Under the bonnet, everything looks period-correct (except for the discreet electric cooling fan), and the vendor informs us that the Alfa runs and drives exceedingly well.
The Monza’s supremely functional style is mesmerising, this legendary example would be the perfect companion for many European tours and events and is built for drivers seeking the Monza experience without risking multi-multi million dollar museum pieces.
