The Appeal
The advent of the Series II brought about the single most radical change made during the whole 36 years of Land Rover Series production. Designed by David Bache, the Series II introduced the barrel-sided bodywork that became part of Land Rover's design language until the original Defender ceased production in 2016. This allowed for the fitment of wider axles without making the entire vehicle much wider from top to bottom.
Series IIs are rare and are not to be mistaken with the similar yet much more numerous IIA: Approximately 42,000 Series II vehicles were produced between 1958 and 1961, while about 640,000 Series IIA models were made between 1961 and 1971.
This 1960 example remains true to its original specifications, featuring distinctive period-correct details like the flat valance behind the front bumper and the 3-bolt tailgate that collectors look out for.
