The Appeal
The Series II was the first Land Rover to receive the David Bache ‘barrel side’ treatment, in the process creating an iconic profile that has endured to the present day. These heavily revised models also got the new 2.25L 72hp petrol engine, a desirable option that is fitted to this excellent 1959 example.
The vendor acquired it in 2015, quickly embarking on a 10-year renovation that has covered virtually every single aspect of the vehicle. He tells us that the priority was preserving the original specification, which is clear from the photos. It presents virtually ‘as new’ - this is definitely one for the collectors.
The attention to detail is impressive. Now finished in popular Bronze Green paintwork, it features tan Exmoor Trim hood and refurbished interior, including dials and speedo. The structure and mechanicals have also been extensively overhauled, including a rebuild of the original petrol engine. The odometer shows just 31 miles, suggestive of this lovely Series 2’s sparing use since completion.
Few classics are as evocative as an original Series II, and this example is amongst the best we’ve seen in a long while.
