The Appeal
Describing the 2CV as quirky does it an injustice - this is a car that is characterful and different, but for good reasons, because it is the culmination of original thinking. That innovation explains why it stayed in production for 40 years; the final cars still offered buyers a level of utility, practicality and comfort that nothing in the same price point could match.
This 1986 is one of the last to leave the production line. Attractive in Red with amusing racing roundels, it is a tidy car that has benefited from a lot of work commissioned by the seller since he acquired it in 2021. Since 2023 alone, it has had over £3,500 of work covering floors, front box sections, electrics, engine overhaul, servicing, and the ignition system. The result is a mechanically sorted car that presents well but isn’t so shiny and spotless that it loses the 2CV’s simple, unassuming ethos. It’s a point reinforced by the current MOT, which runs to May 2027 with no advisories. That could be the car’s last, because a further draw of this Special is that it will be eligible for Historic Vehicle status from 1st April 2027.
The vendor describes it as a wonderful car to drive — economical, nippy, and a genuine head-turner. A few areas remain that could benefit from further attention, including the rear quarters, windscreen seals, and the offside front floor, but this is an honest, well-documented 2CV with strong foundations and a great deal of recent investment. Having now reached 40 years of age, it should qualify for MOT exemption, adding further appeal for the next custodian.
