The Appeal
Late Series IIA Land Rovers have a habit of confusing folk. A distinctive alteration undertaken during the model's production run was the relocation of the headlamps from the valance panel outboard to the front wings. That makes a late IIA appear much like the Series III that followed in 1971. Known as 'Maltese Cross' Land Rovers due to the revised shape of their front grilles, these late IIAs occupy a sweet spot in the lineage and are regarded as some of the best Series vehicles you can find.
Late 241-series examples such as this benefit from an improved gearbox and dash layout, making them a particularly appealing proposition among enthusiasts. Finding one that retains its original chassis, bulkhead, and engine is becoming ever more difficult.
Affectionately nicknamed "Major," this 1970 petrol example is described by the vendor as a very honest and original survivor, not an over-restored showpiece, but a characterful classic with genuine provenance. Previously used on a Dorset apple orchard, it has been dry stored throughout and is now garaged by the current owner.
A thorough mechanical refurbishment has been carried out, encompassing a new Weber carburettor, ignition components, a full fluid change across all drivetrain components, and a set of new Michelin XZL tyres. The vendor reports that it starts, runs, and drives as it should through all gears, including overdrive, and highlights enjoyable long drives through the New Forest. Accompanied by years of accumulated history, this Series IIA presents a compelling opportunity for those seeking an authentic, usable classic Land Rover.1L1A1315 Paul Hames.JPG1.47 MB
