The Appeal

The Mk2 may have stolen its limelight for many years, but here’s proof of why the Mk1 Jaguar has always had an enduringly special place amongst discerning Jaguar enthusiasts. As our photos of this Signal Red 1956 2.4 prove, with its slim windows and those magnificent rear aero spats, it just looks fantastic, a car that bridges the gap between early post-war classics and the 60s machines that kick-started the modern era.

Not many Mk1s remain with the condition and originality of this one. That is a testament to its current long-term keeper, who has commissioned a long list of renovations, including a body restoration and respray in 2019. The interior has also been retrimmed in attractive red leather by specialists BAS Jaguar, including carpets, door cards and seats with correct slimline front buckets. The veneers were restored in 2016.

Factory records confirm this car left the factory as a 2.4L car. These models, unlike the 3.4, came with the distinctive ‘aero’ rear spats you can see in the photos. We are told that the matching numbers engine and gearbox have been fully rebuilt and the car now runs on twin Solex carburettors. The large history file shows a run of regular attention captured in invoices, receipts and handwritten notes. Classic specialist Bell Motor Cars thoroughly checked the car in March 2026, including a full service.

With its beautiful colour scheme, impressive condition, recent checks, and ‘MOD’ gearbox, this is a proper find for the Coventry enthusiast.
