The Appeal
A Jaguar E-Type is likely to be shortlisted for a space in any classic car enthusiast’s dream garage, yet it’s been half a century since the last one rolled off the production line. Finding one in good condition is increasingly rare, and this particular 3.8 coming from long term ownership, has been diligently maintained with an interesting back story.... Read on...
Factory finished in Jaguar’s Opalescent Maroon paint with original cream leather interior trim.
Chassis number 861771 was one of 1,799 right-hand drive UK examples manufactured, however - This particular E-Type is of significant Historical interest being one of the last 28 RHD, FHC 3.8 cars produced. This car was dispatched on 6 th Aug 1964 with production ending with car 861799 on the 10th August - just 4 days later.
Most importantly the EJ type gearbox was the first close ratio all synchro unit fitted to just a small number of very late 3.8 cars, this being one of them - and to the later 1964-6 4.2 series 1 cars. All other 3.8. cars had the non-synchro
Moss box fitted. The EJ type gearbox is favoured by organisations such as Hale Racing and is fitted to many E Type race prepared cars.
A comprehensive restoration in 1996 encompassed new panels, bulkhead, floors, doors (not just skins) and sills, before the car sat off its wheels for five years. In the period between 2014 and 2017, it covered just over one thousand miles, in which time further upgrades included : New fuel tank, Full suspension and brake overhaul (Dunlop brakes) including
handbrake kit, all pipes and hoses, callipers and cylinders & Delphi brake servo for better performance, carburettor service, gearbox and diff service. High torque starter motor fitted, Electric fan fitted, inertia seatbelts fitted.
Due to illness the car was not used and was put back into De humidified storage in 2017 where it remained until recently. Now brought out of storage the car remains in a good solid
condition as the photographs show there is no underseal on the underside and shows the quality and outstanding durability of the workmanship during the now older restoration.
The interior is mostly original and in excellent order except for the centre headlining. The car is supplied with a top-quality headlining kit from B.A.S. International costing £318.53 (invoice).
As can be expected there is light paint imperfections and patina on chrome work but overall, a solid usable E Type with rare Historical provenance. The car has had light recommissioning this included new spark plugs, full oil service with Castrol XL 20-50 oil, full coolant system flush and service, new battery, starts every time
The results of the vendors diligent maintenance are perhaps best reflected in the interior, which is described by the vendor as “mostly original and in excellent order except for the centre headlining”. This has already been partially resolved with the acquisition of a replacement headliner kit from B.A.S. International.
