The Appeal
If you’re tempted to say ‘ruh oh!’ we’re with you. Scooby’s Mystery Wagon wasn’t exactly like the A100, but it was certainly inspired by it, earning Dodge’s versatile minivan a place in motoring iconography.
This 1965 A100 started life as a plush Sportsman, a factory specification that translates as extra windows, bench seats and a more luxurious interior. Today, it’s lost the seats in favour of a more practical van layout, but the windows remain. It is now fitted with high-back ‘Freighliner’ seats and a grunty 5.9L V8 engine.
The condition you see in the photos is the result of an extensive 2018 restoration in the USA, which is documented through invoices provided with the van. It has been tastefully done, resulting in an understated beige finish with nice detailing like those Torq Thrust-style five-spoke alloys and BF Goodrich tyres.
The van arrived in the Uk in early 2020, soon after the restoration was completed. The last MOT, from soon after its arrival, shows 146 miles and the odometer in the photos is now on 746 miles. The suggestion is that the odometer was zeroed during the restoration, indicating that it has covered only a few miles since, but that isn’t verified.
As an antidote to all those European combi vans, with the added advantage of that rumbly V8 soundtrack and Hanna-Barbera overtones, this rare A100 looks very appealing.
