The Appeal

Don Hayter and Syd Enever's sleek MG roadster always needed more power. If you want a factory-sanctioned power upgrade, then you want an MGC, the car that replaced the Big Healey and offered a long-legged, grand touring alternative to the standard B.

With just 4,542 built over two years, these cars are rare, especially in factory black. Indications are that fewer than 100 were built in this finish. We suspect that this beautiful 1969 car is one of the nicest remaining, and it comes with some added star power because it was once owned by the Beckhams. It began life in LHD, was dispatched to the USA, and was repatriated in 2017, when an extensive restoration began. That work included converting the car to RHD, but it otherwise retained the red-over-black color scheme and specification. The work included rebuilding the engine with a Newman fast road cam and lightened flywheel. The gearbox and overdrive unit have also been rebuilt.

The vendor acquired the car in 2023 and subsequently entrusted it to MGOC Workshop in 2024 for a service and general repairs. The work totaled $3,202, as shown in the photos. That invoice is part of an extensive history file that includes restoration photos, emails with the previous keeper who restored the car and photos of the Beckhams and the MG.

Accompanied by its hood, tonneau cover, indoor cover, and CTEK charger, this MGC Roadster is one of the nicest we've seen and benefits from interesting history and recent maintenance.
