The Appeal
The success of the Mini helped to explain the huge array of body styles it inspired – from vans and Wolseley/Riley saloons through to the Mini Moke. Yet the estate version was always underrated, retaining most of the Mini’s puppyish road manners while transforming it into a sizeable load-lugger.
It’s hard to imagine that many of the original components on this 1970 Clubman have been retained. From its gleaming red paintwork to the stainless steel exhaust, this is a comprehensively recommissioned example of a superbly versatile little car. There is little confirmed provenance, but the current owner reports an exhaustive set of mechanical replacements and upgrades, with photographs showing a bare metal rebuild including extensive corrosion protection work.
The full list of works carried out would take up several paragraphs, but a brief summary includes new discs, pads and calipers, accompanied by rear drums, shoes and backplates. Adjustable gas shock absorbers and variable suspension height flank a rebuilt gearbox and rebuilt A+ engine with new pistons, all augmented by a heavy duty starter motor and a high capacity alloy radiator. More recently, ball joints and wheel bearings have been fitted alongside replacement plugs and air filters, a new battery and a replacement heater matrix.
The net result of these works is a car whose original brown paint has been replaced with a lustrous red finish that extends through to the cabin, where three chrome-ringed dials sit behind a three-spoke steering wheel whose drilled design is replicated in the window winders on the replacement door cards. Period flourishes include an in-dash cassette player, original manufacturer plaques under the engine bay and retained Estate and 1275GT badges adorning the double-door tailgate.
