Overdrive fitted providing 5th gear for improved cruising
Well-documented ownership history dating back to 1970
The Appeal
The Land Rover Series IIA is the quintessential British workhorse, an agricultural icon that has earned its place in automotive history through sheer ruggedness and capability. Originally designed for farm work and rural life, these vehicles have become highly sought after by enthusiasts who appreciate their mechanical simplicity, go-anywhere ability, and unmistakable character.
Our 1970 example has been treated to a comprehensive restoration by a retired engineer, with the work documented through rebuild costs visible in the images. The restoration centred around a brand new galvanised Richards chassis, providing a solid foundation for many years of use ahead. The gearbox was stripped and rebuilt, the engine serviced with components replaced as necessary, and the bulkhead restored with replacement A posts and footwells. The body has been resprayed in an attractive Marine blue, complemented by limestone-painted wheels and a new black canvas hood with sand-coloured piping.
Beyond the restoration, this Series IIA benefits from several practical upgrades that enhance its usability. An overdrive has been fitted, providing a 5th gear for more comfortable cruising and improved economy on longer journeys. A Weber carburettor has been installed, and free-wheeling hubs add to the vehicle's practicality. The interior has been thoughtfully refurbished with restored front seats, new rear bench seats, and a faux teak floor in the rear.
The vehicle's history adds further appeal, having been first registered to a lady owner for use with horses, then serving on farms transporting produce, before its recent restoration. As an MOT/road tax-exempt classic, it's ready to enjoy on the road and is reported to drive well.image.png1.92 MB
