The Appeal
The Alfasud was, still is in fact, one of the greatest FWD cars ever built. Pretty Giugiaro styling, beautifully balanced handling and feisty Boxer engines make these cars brilliant road cars and even more entertaining racers.
Carlo Chiti, boss of Alfa Romeo’s racing division Autodelta, immediately spotted the car’s potential. By lightening it and widening the track, Autodelta quickly developed the Sud into a potent grassroots racer, going on to create the Alfasud Trofeo one-make series from 1975.
This 1974 1.3 Ti Group 2 racer is reputed to be Autodelta chassis number 0071 and sports the classic Autodelta Trofeo wide body kit. An array of photographs shows it in action in period. It’s a gem of a car, largely thanks to the current keeper’s careful restoration since buying it in 2019. It had previously been in storage since the 1980s and required full renovation, a project entrusted to Piedmont Alfa specialists Albertinazzi. The work focused on originality, involving renovating the factory components and matching the original 1974 specification.
The car has seen very little use since, which has helped preserve its impressive condition. We’re told it was serviced in February 2024 and that it runs and drives well. Opportunities to acquire period Sud racers are few and far between - this is a chance to discover the magic of Rudolph Hruska’s fantastic Alfasud on the track.
The vendor says:
