The Appeal
This 1976 Alfa Romeo Alfasud 1.2L 5M forms part of the carefully curated Blaauwbank collection that includes an eclectic mix of multi-generational cars, a selection of rare and interesting vehicles, carefully stored in purpose-built, climate-controlled dry storage hangars, located in the arid climate of Central South Africa.
Bought new by the previous keeper in Italy and moved to South Africa when she relocated, it has subsequently enjoyed the warm, cossetting climes of the country.
The vendor added it to his collection a few years ago and has carefully dry stored it. It is highly original and now runs well too, thanks to a recent service and tune-up. Additional work included a new timing belt, water pump, clutch and brake hydraulics refreshed.
The vendor says:
“In a world where few believe in miracles, here stands proof that modern-day miracles do exist, a rust-free Alfasud, yes, I know, that is a terrible oxymoron; however, it is true, and it is in part miracle, and in part fate.
“I cannot presume another original and unrestored Sud of the first series is available to the market today in this kind of condition. All of my cars have been carefully curated over many years, and dry stored in a custom-built facility, the arid heart of Central South Africa, far away from the ravages of coastal air.”
History and Paperwork

The vendor says:
“Coming to the subject car, in 1975, a young and impressionable previous keeper was packing her bags for a short stint at the Italian Consulate in Pretoria South Africa, sure to return to Italy in five years, she packed her brand-new left-hand drive Alfasud 5M in with her. Well, the rest as they say, is history, Silvana never did return to Italy, but she and her Sud spent the next four decades in the temperate, Italian steel-friendly climes of Pretoria, at 1600M above sea level, no salty air, no wet winters and roads free of salt, the Sud survived.
“The previous keeper always cared for the car, and the 40000KM displayed is the correct mileage, the interior presents beautifully, and the cabin still has that Alfasud smell.”
