The Appeal
Before adopting the more focused Sport Wagon name, Alfa’s 33 estate was known for a couple of years as the Giardinetta. Based on the top 33 ‘Quadrifoglio Oro’ trim level, it focused more on luxury than sport. And, as befits an upmarket car built in the afterglow of the Audi Quattro’s launch, it was available with the option of the clever switchable Ototrasm Four Wheel Drive system.
Each 33 estate body was built at Pininfarina’s works in Piedmont before moving to Alfa’s Pomigliano D’Arco plant near Naples for assembly. As a result, these were expensive cars. Production was low, and sales were never high. This is especially true of the Giardinetta, as it was only available for a couple of years. All of which makes the arrival of this 1987 Giardinetta 4x4 a treat for enthusiasts.
The car is fitted with Alfa’s fizzy 1.5L ‘Boxer’ engine in ‘Ti’ spec, which means it is equipped with two twin-choke Weber carburettors to deliver 95bhp via the 5spd box. It is one of the last Giardinettas built before the switch to Sport Wagon and is painted in dark silver metallic, one of only two colours available for the Giardinetta. The condition is remarkable - this is a proper time warp car. Thanks to the low mileage of under 51,000 km it looks like it rolled out of the showroom mere months ago.
Beyond the condition, there is the reassurance of a recent cambelt change and service. The Revisione was also renewed in December 2025. The car carries Italian registration. This car is a lucky find for fans and one of the last cars wholly designed and developed by the firm.
