The Appeal
The E24-generation of 6 Series brought new levels of refinement to the large BMW coupé. Designed by the legendary Paul Bracq, it incorporated classic BMW styling hallmarks, including a refined variant of the ‘Hofmeister Kink’, frameless front windows and slender ‘twin kidney’ vertical grilles in the sharply raked nose.
Production ended in April 1989, and this 635CSi is one of the last examples, registered in the same year.It boasts the Highline specification, which added more Nappa leather to the interior, and new spoilers and cross-spoke alloy wheels to the exterior.
The seller says they are the fourth owner of the car, and have owned it for 13 years, during which they have undertaken a significant amount of work to both the mechanicals and the body. The car comes with a comprehensive service history supported by extensive documentation, and an MOT that is valid until late September 2027.
This Royal Blue metallic car was resprayed and undersealed in October 2024; the seller states that attention was at that time also given to known E24 corrosion spots, resulting in the replacement of the rear wheel arches and a front wing. The car is fitted with period-correct original 15-inch cross-spoke alloy wheels with Uniroyal 225/60 tyres (the spare is a Continental). Buyers will also appreciate the headlamp wipers and the original, nearly complete tool kit inside the boot lid.
There are minor age-related marks upon close inspection, and the rear spoiler shows some paint cracking. The seller reports wind noise when the car is driven ‘at speed’; this is stated to be due to worn window seals, which can also allow minor water ingress if the car is left out in heavy rain for extended periods. A second-hand replacement seal is included in the sale, which may rectify this.
Beneath the bonnet, the 3.5-litre ‘M30B35’ straight six is a replacement unit, and numerous other engine and suspension components, including radiator and fuel lines, have been fitted in recent years. See ’The Detail’ section for further information.
The two tone black-over-beige interior with leather seats is largely original, complete with cruise control, trip computer and electric front seats with driver memory. The stereo head unit is a modern Kenwood model with USB slot. The driver’s seat showing some age-related wear such as cracked leather. It should be noted that the air conditioning has not functioned during the seller’s 13-year tenure, and that the headlight Levellers are also not non-functional.
With its distinctive 'shark nose' style, smooth straight six engine and comfortable ride, this is a grand tourer in the classic mould that has benefitted from extensive work in recent years, and is ready to be enjoyed straight away.
