When the Mazda MX-5 reintroduced the world to the joys of lightweight roadsters, other Japanese manufacturers opted to follow a slightly different path. The original Toyota MR2 was a case in point – also a compact two-seater but incorporating mid-engined mechanicals and a Targa roof in place of the ubiquitous soft-top. The second generation MR2 strayed even further from the path, with a traditional coupe design and more svelte lines replacing the studied angularity of the original version.
For the first few years of its life, this black MR2 lived in Japan, before it was imported to the UK in late 1998. Since then, it’s had just four owners, with the most recent custodian keeping it in a garage when not in use. As a result of relatively light use, it has covered less than 80,000 miles in more than thirty years, and it represents an ideal opportunity for someone seeking a driveable car (and the MR2 is endlessly driveable) which would benefit from light restoration and refurbishment.
Mechanically, there are no causes for concern, with the unburstable twin-cam 16-valve engine reportedly running well. The bodywork has worn the years impressively too, although there are two small patches of bubbling and various stone chips and scratches across the still-shiny black paintwork. Similarly, the interior bears a light patina throughout, from the worn gearknob to the frayed and discoloured front seat bolsters. Indeed, the seats would benefit from refurbishment or recovering. Specification highlights include air conditioning and a Pioneer media system with outsized screen, though this reportedly requires some attention from the car’s next owner. image.png1.56 MB
