The Appeal
With hindsight, the Mark III Volkswagen Golf represented a logical midway point between the driver-focused dynamics of the Mark II and the executive car refinement of the Mark IV. Introducing conventional dashboards and modern safety aids like airbags to the Golf, the Mark III was at its most practical in estate form. An exceptionally well preserved GL estate has now reached the market with a highly unusual history – including rumours that this was a VW press car at the 1998 London Motor Show…
While the Motor Show provenance is anecdotal, the car’s broader history is more definitive. It was serviced annually by father-and-son owners until 2010, when it was effectively parked up and not driven again until 2025. An extensive mechanical recommission has since been undertaken, covering everything from fluid replacements and new tyres through to the fitment of replacement timing belt and water pump. The current owner describes it as driving well, with a smooth gearbox and no rattles from the engine.
From its glossy red paintwork to that very original interior (including the period radio cassette player with a removable face panel), this Golf is a true time capsule. There are few wear and tear issues to report, other than a handful of dead pixels on the odometer display, a sagging headlining and a faulty fuel gauge. Otherwise, this car has shrugged off the 32,800 miles it’s covered since new, and it feels more than capable of providing many more years of solid and dependable service.
