The Appeal
To the uninitiated, Volkswagen’s uber-functional Caddy Pick Up may not seem like the obvious candidate for classic status, and yet this practical workhorse has quietly become one of the more collectable classic commercials. Its compact dimensions, diesel frugality and robust VW mechanicals make it a genuinely usable classic, yet finding a well-kept example that hasn't been worked hard or neglected is no easy task.
This 57,000-mile 1999 example in bright yellow has been in the care of its current keeper for five years, during which time it has been garaged and well maintained. The stamped service book contains 11 entries, four added under the current ownership and most recently in April 2026. The vendor reports the underside to be sound and solid, with original yellow underseal still visible beneath the wheel arches, and notes just a couple of minor cosmetic rust spots on the front wings. Inside, the cabin is clean with no rips or stains, and the headlining is described as being in good condition. A temperamental dashboard clock and a heater that blows warm on the cold setting are noted as minor foibles.
This is an honest, well-documented Caddy — the vendor states they have not seen another in this condition. It is supplied with a lengthy, advisory-free MOT.
The vendor says:
“The VW is a great classic that is both practical and collectible with good availability of spares. What I find special about this Caddy is the original patina which gives it real charm and unlike many others has not been over restored. I have not seen another in this condition and it's amazing how people smile when they see it.”

The vendor says:
“It's been in my ownership for 5 years. There are 4 previous owners. Originally, it was supplied as a company car to a manager in a building firm in West Sussex. The previous owner used the car to ferry his bikes around, and I believe prior to that it belonged to a lifeguard, hence the RNLI sticker, and it was previously in storage for some years. During my ownership, the car has been pampered and wanted for nothing and has always been garaged. There's a service book and a file of old receipts, tax discs and MOTs.”

“Strong bright paintwork in eye-catching yellow that polishes up beautifully. The rear bed was professionally painted in 2021 and remains clean. Underneath the car is sound and solid with no MOT advisories recorded for rust. Remarkably, you can still see the original yellow underseal under the wheel arches.
“Clean interior with no rips or stains. Headlining is good, and seats have been covered. There's a Sony radio with USB. Note: the dashboard clock is a bit temperamental, and the heater does blow warm on the cold setting, but the vents can be closed. Also a few light scratches on the glove box lid. There is also one key.
“The car performs as it should. It won't win any drag races, but it chugs along very nicely; its mechanical, rugged simplicity makes for a very relaxing drive. I took it to France recently and it didn't miss a beat. It's benefited from regular maintenance and renewal and has a good service history.”
