The Appeal
After the success of the 164, Alfa was seriously gunning for BMW and Mercedes. The 166 was the car it built to do that, one with the handsome lines of the 156, the verve of the 164 and the Teutonic build quality of those established rivals.
Despite delivering on all three, mostly notable with the sort of heavy door thunk not typical of previous Alfas, the 166 never quite hit its sales targets. That makes any survivor exceptionally rare but well worth seeking out, especially the Busso-engined 3L V6 model that we have here. It is a high-specification Lusso with the versatile Sportronic box that offers sequential semi-automatic shift alongside a full auto mode.
Featuring attractive Odyssey Blue metallic paint with Momo leather, it is a very well-kept car that has been impeccably maintained in recent years by Alfa specialists like Monza Sport Tuning and Alfa Workshop in Royston. The thick history file shows annual servicing in recent years by both specialists, irrespective of mileage. The cambelt was changed in 2018 and again in 2024, and the car was serviced by Alfa Workshop in October 2025. The current MOT runs to November 2026 with no advisories.
The current keeper acquired the car in 2024 and has used it for European trips, where it has proved utterly reliable. As an antidote to more common V6-engined executive saloons, this 166 is compelling. It has been maintained properly and looks ready to enjoy.
The vendor says:
“The Alfa Romeo 166 is the nicest saloon; it drives in a way like no other vehicle. The Busso engine sounds like no other; it can cruise the motorways and still accelerate like no other car of its class for the time and still impresses today. It's such a beautiful looking car; it stands out among other saloons of its class and has a side profile that most modern cars cannot replicate or match. I adore this vehicle, and with the love and commitment to maintaining and looking after this car by previous owners and myself, I hope it sells to another collector and someone who truly will keep it at it's best for many years to come.”

The vendor says:
“Galvanised exterior; car in very good condition considering age, and the fact that over the years, this vehicle has been loved and driven all over Europe, and still drives and looks as good in 2026 as it did new in 2001. Some cosmetics but nothing that would put anyone off, I hope. Couple of marks here and there, that's for sure, but again still extremely good for the age of the car.
“Interior is exceptionally good. Carpets and mats look fantastic and all the seats and blinds work and function as they should. Electric seats work well and still have heated function. Wooden steering wheel feels fantastic and overall, the interior is truly a lovely place to be, especially for passengers in the rear where the seats mould around the occupants with momo leather all round. It's such a comfortable soft leather and this extends to the headrests as well. Just lovely.”
The Mechanics
- 2,959cc V6 Busso 24-valve engine
- Four-speed Sportronnic automatic transmission with sequential option
- Very well-maintained with large history file as shown
- Serviced and maintained by Alfa specialists in recent years
- Recent service and cambelt change with few miles since this work

The vendor says:
“Only faults have been that the central locking doesn't work on the key fob, and other then that, all electrics work well. Vehicle has been serviced and maintained exceptionally well and is a credit to both original owners who looked after the car and made sure service records and care for the car were always met. Service records are easily one of the most extensive I've seen and this will be reflected in the document pack that accompanies the vehicle.”
