The Appeal
Land Rover took the car towards field and track, Dutton instead went in an altogether more water-based direction. Different ideas, same commitment to joyful exploration. The clever Reef wasn’t a new idea, but it certainly modernised a way to enjoy the water without having to tow a separate boat around.
Based on a Ford Fiesta donor, the Reef combines familiar road-car controls and mechanicals with a purpose-built fibreglass monocoque hull, allowing it to transition from tarmac to water and back again with the pull of a jet clutch lever.
This particular example is one of the last Reef models Dutton will ever produce, as the company has confirmed it will no longer build amphibious vehicles. Manufactured in 2021 and registered in early 2022, it has recorded just 15 hours on its hour meter since completion. It has had just two keepers since new, the current one since 2023.
The marine-grade components — from the AISI 316 stainless steel fasteners to the triple-coated suspension and cast aluminium impeller — speak to a build designed to withstand the demands of dual-environment use. For anyone who has ever dreamt of driving into the water and simply carrying on, this may well be the opportunity.
