Description

A car that certainly needs no introduction is the one and only DeLorean. Presenting superbly throughout, WMO 242Y is a low mileage example that represents an extremely rare opportunity to own a piece of motoring history. Made famous by the 1980’s Hollywood hit ‘Back to the Future’, the DeLorean is perhaps of the most instantly recognisable cars even for none enthusiasts. This beautiful example was brought into the U. K. in 1999 and from MOT records we know the car had covered just 22845 KM’s. By 2020 mileage was just 24480 when it came into the hands of one of our customers. The car sat as part of an impressive collection for six years and in 2025 was transported to a Huddersfield specialist who serviced and re-commissioned the Delorean. Around £6000 was spent on rebuilding the entire fuel injection system. Work included new fuel injectors, a new fuel pump, fuel delivery unit, cold start thermo timer, new fuel accumulator, new water temp sender and new manifold bolts and inlet manifold o rings. The car was then submitted for MOT and passed with no advisories.

The DeLorean story is one of continuous development and clever engineering. From the initial idea through to concept and ultimately production, the DMC-12 went through 3 engine proposals, major chassis redesigns and many interior changes. The iconic design of the body was a product of Giorgetto Giugiaro who drew inspiration from his previous work, the Porsche Tapiro, a concept car from the 70s. Uniquely, the DeLoreans body is constructed from brushed SEA 304 stainless steel aside from 3 very special cars plated in 24-karat gold. The chassis was designed by no one other than Lotus' Colin Chapman who re-engineered the current design to feature a steel backbone chassis with Y-frames at the front and rear. Grumman Aerospace were responsible for the design of the gullwing doors providing the most iconic part of the vehicle, etching the car into motoring history.
A2. 85L single overhead cam PRV V6 engine powers the DeLorean, this engine was developed from the 2. 7-litre V6 that was used in the Renault 30 specially for the DMC production. While power for the US market was limited to 130hp, the utilisation of an alloy block with cast iron liners provided great weight reduction to keep performance suitable for a sportscar. The double wishbones front suspension and rack and pinion steering combine with a light front end to make the DeLorean superbly agile through corners. Under braking, the power assisted brake system is superbly responsive providing excellent stopping power.

Following the many changes throughout the development of the DeLorean, production began in December of 1980 with the first car announced on 21 January 1981. A large waiting list grew of eager buyers who paid above the retail price. With a recession hitting in America sales volume struggled whilst production volume increased. Unfortunately, DMC were placed into receivership in early 1982 and were subsequently bought out by Consolidated International and partially completed DeLorean's still on the assembly line were finished.

This restored DeLorean is a beautiful example throughout, structurally excellent, presenting with lovely bodywork and a first class interior WMO 242Y is ideal for shows and events, but with its recent re-commissioning it's also a car to drive and enjoy on a regular basis. We don't see these very often, an opportunity not to be missed...
