The Appeal

When MG decided to chase US showroom sales by winning races, it faced a major problem in the form of a power deficit to the homegrown iron. The result was the MGC GTS, a slippery, lightweight MGC GT that proved so successful that it is best known by its nickname - the Sebring, so named after the track where Hopkirk and Hedges scored victory in the 1968 12hr race.
Only a handful of genuine Sebrings were built, but the iconography and the look have been so influential that replicas are common and highly desirable. Here is one of them, a genuine CGT built in the same year as that win and developed into a Sebring replica around 20 years ago as part of what the vendor describes as a ‘ground up’ restoration. With its mint green and orange colour scheme, it is a really eye-catching example.
The car is set up to be used for long classic touring events, for which its mechanical specification and comfortable beige leather cabin look perfectly suited. The vendor tells us that he bought it in 2013 and has used it regularly for such trips, clocking up around 6,000 miles during that time.
Mechanically, the car has recently benefited from an engine-out overhaul carried out by a classic car specialist. It should be noted, however, that some exhaust smoke persists despite this work, and further investigation is needed. Fitted with a 4spd overdrive gearbox, the vendor describes the car as relaxed at motorway speeds and well-suited to touring. It comes to market with the added reassurance of a voluntary and advisory-free MOT.
The vendor says:
“Few classic MGs offer the character of the MGC. Launched at the 1967 Earls Court Motor Show and built for barely two years, it put a smooth, torquey 2,912cc straight-six under the MGB’s familiar lines. The distinctive bonnet bulge is the only outward clue to the extra engine. The result is a genuine grand tourer: relaxed at motorway speeds, effortless in the lanes, and capable of 120mph in period. With fewer than 9,000 built, the MGC remains one of the rarest and most rewarding cars to wear the octagon. It’s a great example. The slight engine smoke needs a careful set of hands. All the recent work has been carried out by a classic car specialist. The car is simply a second project that needs a new home.”
