There's something rather lovely about a British sports car. It was made to be fun. Nothing more, nothing less. Driving one creates a sense of occasion, and that's why enthusiasts keep coming back. The Triumph Spitfire 1500 remains one of the most accessible and engaging British sports cars of the 1970s: compact, lightweight and pleasingly simple. Finding one that has covered just 17,500 miles and spent nearly four decades in dry storage is another matter entirely.
This example was Ziebart rustproofed from the outset, and laid up in a dry garage from around 1981. A copy of the Daily Mail dated 15 August 1981, discovered in the boot, provides a neat marker of when the car was put away. There it remained, undisturbed, until it was acquired by the vendor at auction in 2022.
Since then, a thorough recommissioning has covered the brakes, fuel system, exhaust, ignition, and more, as detailed below. New seat foams have been installed, and a period Mota-Lita leather steering wheel has been added, though the original remains with the car.
The vendor states that the yellow paintwork remains remarkably uniform in colour and sheen, and that no obvious corrosion is present on the bodywork. The interior, with its black-and-white chequered trim, appears well preserved. Some marks visible around the black trim are reported to be remnants of the original wax-based rustproofing rather than corrosion.
Among the documentation is a handwritten notebook kept by the first owner, recording the car's early mileage, fuel purchases and even its name: "Buttercup". Alongside this sit the original handbooks, a stamped British Leyland service book and the original Ziebart rustproofing invoice: an unusually personal history file for a car of this era.

"Every so often, a car emerges from long-term storage that makes you question whether the odometer can possibly be telling the truth.

"This remarkable 1977 Triumph Spitfire has covered just 17, 500 miles from new, and behind that extraordinary figure lies an equally remarkable story. The Spitfire was purchased brand new by its original owner as a gift for his then wife. Tragically, she passed away not long afterwards and, rather than sell the car, her husband put it away in a garage.
"And there it stayed.
"Years became decades, fashions came and went, and the little yellow Triumph remained tucked away and largely undisturbed until very recently. The term “time warp” is often overused in the classic-car world, but here it feels entirely justified. This isn't a restored car made to look original; it is a wonderfully preserved survivor that appears to have simply stepped out of another era.
"What makes this Spitfire so compelling isn't simply the 17, 500 miles showing on its odometer. It is the combination of low mileage, originality, preservation and history.
"This is not a car that has been dismantled and rebuilt in an attempt to recreate 1977. It has, quite remarkably, survived it.
From its wonderfully preserved yellow paintwork and remarkably fresh interior to the traces of its original rustproofing treatment — and even the newspaper left in the boot in August 1981 — there is a sense that this little Triumph has been caught in suspended animation.
For the Triumph enthusiast or collector who values originality above restoration, opportunities such as this are exceptionally difficult to find.
"There may be more immaculate restored Spitfires, but finding another 1977 Triumph Spitfire with just 17, 500 miles from new, preserved in such wonderfully original and unmolested condition, could prove very difficult indeed.
