The Appeal
Imposing and regal, the Sedanca DeVille is a car from another time, when passengers rode in comfort in the rear while the chauffeur could be out in the elements with the front seat roof neatly stowed. Driving it is an event in itself and despite the size and age it is fairly easy to pilot, with heavy but accurate steering, a slick four speed ‘box and a delightfully smooth engine.
The Rolls is in remarkably good condition inside and out, and although it hasn’t done big mileage it has been lovingly cared for thanks to the attention of marque specialists keeping it in excellent running order.
The History and Paperwork
- Copies of factory order forms with the car
- Sold to Barker Bodies to be the 1930 Olympia show car
- Maintained by Rolls Royce specialist in recent years
- Full specialist mechanical rebuild in 2005
- MOT exempt
The Interior
- Superb cord rear cabin interior
- Likely original blue leather front seats
- Raisable glass divider to rear
The Sedanca De Ville body is unique in its split between an enclosed rear passenger section separated from the drivers front section by a glass divider which can be lowered from rear, and while the rear is soft Bedford cord and plush carpet, the driver has a material roof which can be rolled back, and with the hinged side supports, stowed in a special area in the front of the roof leaving the front seats open to the elements.
This part of the car looks very original, with the park wooden dash and brass rimmed dials in fine order, larger steering wheel and metal controls in good condition and the thick leather seats likely to be original.
The blue hide has some colour wear, the blue carpet looks recent and is in very good condition. To the right of the drivers seat are the seat shift lever and handbrake, metal with black tops and in lovely condition.
The rear section is in lovely condition, again with recent looking blue carpet complemented by well padded cream bedford cord back seats, matching cord door cards and side panels, headlining and a pair of fold out seats hidden in the bulkhead, all in very good condition.
In the side panels are vanity mirror and lamps in a wood surround with cigar lighters mounted above, however the drivers side lighter is missing.
The Exterior
- Superb grill and mascot
- Great chrome
- Very good paint
- Excellent panels
- Wire wheels with good Michelin tyres
- Great vinyl roof on rear
- Excellent folding front vinyl roof
The overall condition of this 92 year old car is extremely good, and it has a real presence as you walk around it. The body panels - a metal skin over wood frame - are all very good, with no dings in the smooth bodywork and the paint is lovely, it has a nice gloss across the two tone livery, blue on the body and black on the wings and running boards - not the same sort of shine a modern car has due to the older kind of paint used, but a beautiful shine. There are a few small chips and marks most dont stand out, only a small scrape on the nearside rear wing which has cracked the paint is noticeable.
It has a hard vinyl roof on the rear and a roll up rood at the front, both in excellent condition, and the wire wheels look good with their correct style Michelin tyres, which have deep tread, 2 of which were fitted in 2019, all supplied by Longstone Tyres. On the running board mounted spare there is an additional accessory strap on rear view mirror.
The radiator shell has a superb finish, and the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot is likewise excellent as are the large headlamps and smaller sidelights. At the back the lamps have a good finish to the chrome and a large and fairly new looking luggage trunk is mounted on the back.
The Mechanics
- Engine and gearbox rebuilt in 2005
- Radiator re-cored in 2005
- Electric starter
In 2005 Taylor’s Rolls Royce and Bentley specialists, who have been regularity maintaining the Sedanca for a number of years, rebuilt the engine and gearbox, including cylinder head and crankshaft machine work, replacing the valves and valve seats and guides and cleaning the block’s internal passages as well as replacing the gearbox first motion shaft and fitting a new radiator core, which alone cost £2000.
Finally the rotating assembly (pistons, con rods, crankshaft, flywheel and clutch assemblies) was balanced by a specialist, due to uneven running prior to the rebuild. This has resulted in a remarkably smooth engine and a very enjoyable car to drive.
There is an electric starter, with a foot button beside the clutch, but also comes with a starting handle, just in case. Under the car, the huge chassis and the floor pan are very clean and visually appear in very good condition.
Summary
This is a stunning car with amazing presence. Its overall condition is excellent, with a great interior and bodywork, but perhaps the best thing is how well it drives with its quiet and smooth 6 cylinder engine and precise gearbox, it is a joy to be behind the wheel
