THE APPEAL


Nobody was quite prepared for the impact of the dramatic styling of the Ford Anglia 105E when it made its debut in 1959. Instead of the Plain Jane appearance of Fords of old, the new baby saloon ushered in an avant-garde look that borrowed heavily from the styling of US models, while its reverse-raked rear windscreen was a unique feature that became the car’s signature. 

Yet despite the rakish looks, it was still a Ford, which meant it was affordable, easy to own and maintain and inexpensive to run. It’s no wonder, then, that it very quickly became one of the best-selling cars in the UK and – indeed – across Europe. 

This one is a really lovely example – a charming, restored example from the first full year of production, registered in July 1960 and with just four keepers on the log book, making it desirable to Ford collectors as well as those looking for a classic car that oozes nostalgia but is also simple and easy to own.

THE INTERIOR

One of the highlights of this car is its cabin, which has been fully retrimmed at some point in the car’s past and has smart new carpets and two-tone grey leatherette seat facings with maroon fabric inserts.

It’s a basic but extremely charming interior, with a speedometer and fuel gauge housed in one trapezoidal pod and a glovebox to match it on the other side. Being an upmarket Deluxe model, it also gets a heater, with smart Mazak controls, and two-speed wipers. Decadence, indeed. 

There’s very little else, but there’s a clear transatlantic influence to the switchgear and controls and which are almost a work of art in themselves.

THE EXTERIOR

The Anglia was restored in 2017 and the colour changed to two-tone Imperial Maroon and Purbeck Grey from its previous blue. It was one of the most popular colour schemes on the Anglia Deluxe and really suits the car’s angular, avant-garde styling.

The quality of the finish is exceptional, with superb paint and no visible rust, while it appears to be equally as good underneath.

The wheels have been refurbished and new tyres fitted, while the majority of the chrome has been replaced.

THE MECHANICS

Ford’s peppy 997cc engine is surprisingly lively in the 105E, which, when combined with its rear-wheel-drive layout, made it quite popular among racers and tuners. 

This example is in great mechanical order and starts and runs well, with the owner describing it as in good health mechanically having been overhauled during the car’s restoration. The brakes, steering and suspension all appear to be in good, sound order.

SUMMARY


The Anglia is one of the most identifiable British cars of the 1960s and this one is a truly charming example that has a lot of collector appeal, not only because it’s from the first full year of production but also because it’s in very good overall condition, having been subject to a quality restoration. The exterior and interior are lovely and it drives as it ought to.
